i know the trigger housing is steel vs plastic. besides that, i'm not really sure. i'm sure someone will chime in with all the details. i prefer the older ones with wood stock.

yes, they are made better. Mostly finishing techniques (surface finish, and machining finishes).

Anything pre-2007 will be a metal trigger guard.

EDIT: you asked for differences. new ones will not be blued (even the stainless will be painted silver). I think they have a few options in production that offer the real stainless finish now. The new ones have a krinkle painted receiver that tends to peel when firing and gum up the receiver (older models will have nice bluing or anodizing). They also have plastic trigger guards and horribly machined parts in the new ones. It is not uncommon for guys to say that their new rifle shows extensive gouges on the bolt face and internals.

I like the older ones. The newest 10/22 I have is 2000. My oldest is 1975.

I was browsing at a gun store yesterday and decided to take a look at the 10/22 rifles cause I was thinking of getting a second one to put some tech sights on. I was surprised at how cheap the new stocks feel and look compared to my walnut stock for my 70's 10/22.

Do what I did. Make that cheap stock fit your hand like a glove.

If I bought a new 10/22 I wouldn't worry about the stock. I have my current 10/22 in a hogue stock and would put that receiver in the original stock for it and the new one in the hogue. Not that I have the money for it anyway, though.

Well lets see vintage 10-22's have some to all of the following

                          pre warning label barrel
                          metal butt plate
                          metal trigger guard
                          walnut stock
                          better machining
                          better finishing

a modern 10-22 has none of the above

So I guess I like vintage 10-22's better and sure I guess I could like Turtle also
