    CCI: Mini-mag vs. Blazer

I searched and could not find this discussion, so if it exists somewhere, please post the link and pardon my sub-standard search skills...

But in comparing these two I can't see any difference beyond the copper wash on the bullet for the mini-mag. Ballistically they seem the same: MV, bullet type and weight, etc.

I read a couple of posts that stated that the blazer burned "dirty", but not much more. Is there any real difference between the two other than the copper wash?

I have a rimfire kit coming for a Sig P220, and was wondering which of these two to break it in with.

    TIA

Mini mags, being packed separately in a box the way they are, will likely be more consistent. Blazer is packed in a bulk box, so the rounds jostle against each other and you can get small inconsistencies - small dents in the bullets, slight differences in the seating, etc. - but that's still really not that bad.

I'd say that the Mini Mags actually crud up the barrels on my M&P 15-22 and 10/22 more than the Blazers do, in spite of the copper wash. As far as carbon fouling, I don't really notice any difference. No real difference in accuracy, either, in my guns. My 10/22 will do nickel- or quarter-sized groups with Blazer at 50 yards.

Blazer comes in two kinds of bulk packaging, the loose 525rd boxes and the individual packed 500rd boxes. I used the 500rd Blazer to break in my P226 conversion kit and they worked just fine. Does seem to burn a little dirtier than the mini-mags but not much. Mini-Mags seem to be a bit more consistent in accuracy too.

I just started my last 1k rounds of MiniMags, If the CCI Blazer is that close, I may have to take a look at them.

What would be a good price to look for?

I LOVE shooting Blazer. Its very accurate in all my rifles and my Kimber 1911 conversion. If you get them for $15 a brick of 500 you got a good deal, dont pay more than $20 especially online.

MiniMags have like a wax that coats the whole cartridge I have noticed, but that doesnt seem to effect cycling at all or cleanliness. MiniMags cycle virtually 100% in all my guns, and Blazer does as well.

PS the 525 box of Blazer is not the same ammo as the sorted 500. The bullets are coated/finished different and they used to be made by Federal (525).

They're 14.95 a box at Wild Sports. I've bought a few boxes there myself.... probably the best deal for .22 in town, and the blazer runs great in everything I shoot it in. I'll never go back to Federal bulk pack, and I dare say I like it more than the CCI Mini Mags.

Here is where we were all buying it before AB962 was struck down.

Dunns $159 shipped for 5000 rds. (it is 10 boxes of 500 sorted)

                Enjoy!

Thanks for the info about the 500 vs 525 round boxes, and the sorting. I've never seen the 500 round, didn't know it came other than the 525's.

Dunns had both the 525 lose and the 500 sorted (10 50rd boxes). Now they just have the 500. I've heard there is a difference but I cannot tell. I have a case of both.

I did a side by side comparison and posted it here somewhere. Blazer actually has better fps and ft lb compared to Mini Mags. For 3 cents less I will continue to use Blazer over Mini Mags. Now in some cases I will use 200 or so Mini Mags to help coat a feed ramp and break in a new .22lr pistol or rifle. For now I only try and use Blazer.

Time to try out the Blazers again. Hope I don't get a "bad" box again =/

I use both CCI Mini Mags and Blazer. I honestly can't distinguish any accuracy differences at the 75 yard targets I was shooting. Even the "C" stamped on the brass is the same typeface on both.

I also noticed on CCI Mini Mags the bullet sometimes has a wax coating residue that I used to wipe off before loading. I got tired of doing so and lately I just shoot them as is and I don't have any problems.
