why do people always seem to misunderstand this? CA law is 26"(measured in its shortest fireable configuraiton) for all rifles (rimfire and centerfire) and shotguns, lest they be considered an SBR or SBS. Separately, CA has an AW law that applies to just semi-auto centerfire rifles, and they have to be 30". But the 30" rule does not apply to any other centerfire rifle types.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

wait, I thought a rimfire with a fixed mag greater than 10 round was a AW, hence the tube magazine exception (marlin model 60)

        Yup.

Rimfire and non-semiautomatic centerfire: 16" barrel, 26" OAL
        Shotgun: 18" barrel, 26" OAL
Semiautomatic centerfire: 16" barrel, 30" OAL

Again, California determines OAL by minimum operable length. Federal determines it by maximum length. The only one that comes to mind that is close is the Sig 522, and it is 26" in it's folded condition.
The Kel-Tec SU22C folds like the SU-16A/B/CA where it cannot be fired when folded.

nope. a rimfire rifle can have a fixed mag of any capacity, and not be an AW. Large-cap mag rules are separate from AW rules.

            Because CA laws are convoluted.

Not quite. They have to be .22 caliber tube feed types. The term "rimfire" is not mentioned in the exception at all. So .22 caliber centerfire cartridge tubular magazines would also be exempt. But .17 caliber rimfire tubular magazines would not be exempt.

Then there is the other exception for tube feed mags of any caliber if they are contained in a lever action firearm.

So a 10+ capacity tubular magazine for .17 caliber rimfire would only be exempt if it was contained in a lever action firearm.
