Note there are no cuts on the stock and just one very small ding that I was able to make go away

    Rear sight, bolt, and gunk

    Complete rifle

Now as for rust I dont think I have run into any. The whole rifle is covered in a nasty film which made my hands look like the hands of a 10 pack a day smoker but I have yet to run into anything other than gunk. As I said the stock is beautiful with not scratches what-so-ever! I have done an initial cleaning and man that gunk is horriable but after a half a can of gun scrubber most is gone. My verdict is this rifle rocks and either the rusties arent rusty or I just lucked out.

Not bad for a 400 dollar rifle IMHO

Beautiful, looks brand new. The stock is really nice. Probably cosmaline on the rifle. Might try some mineral spirits. I use boiling water to remove it from the barrels and actions of a couple of Mosins, worked great. Just gotta make sure you dry it out really good. Hair dryer works fine.

Congrats on the Kimber. I am jealous. Watch that fondling thing.

That seems to be the reoccurring theme with those "rusties" for the most part. Some have some rust on the bolt, but most seem pretty clean except for dried preservative on the bolts which looks like rust. Luck you didn't get the dreaded cut on the stock....that seems to be a very common thing on these rifles.

Received my two 82G "rusties". I will call CMP customer service and complain about the lack of rust on this pair of "rusties". Love the tiger stripe stock. What do you all think?

I bought one of the 82g rifles before they offered the rusties , I played around with mine and relocated the trigger pivot point and got the trigger down to 3.5 oz . I have a tuner on it and have shot 5 shot 50 meter groups that are pretty amazing . The last i heard the goverment standard for these rifles to shoot better .82 at 50 yards (mine shoots way better than that standard). I also found the biggest improvement was in the proper torque of the action screws , I started at 2inch pounds and worked my way up until i found what was best , in the case of my rifle it was 12 inch pounds . I hope you enjoy yours as much as i have mine !

You should do a bolt tear down as this is where the rust is found

Nothing less than spectacular. Beautiful wood with lots of curly features. Hard to do better than that. Just got an email today that they are processing my order. If mine is just nearly as beautiful as yours I'll be one happy camper.

Looks like you scored in the wood lottery there!

                          Question:

How come this type of .22 rifle (of all makes) has that weird rail thing underneath the stock?

It is a rail that holds the handstop for position shooting

I did not mail order this. Someone picked it for me at the South Store on the 2nd and received it yesterday. That is only 4 work days. Rolling the dice with mail ordering a 82G is a bad idea as most have some razor cut on the stock and some on the metal. Have someone pick it for you at either South or North stores is the best option. He said they only had a few blonds and he grabbed the best two. He is going again on the 16th and I have him pick up another blond for me. For a small fee per rifle, he will do the picking for you. PM me if you are interested in this service.

Yes as Orlando said handstop for off hand shooting and also for bipod installation. The 82G is one serious purposely built target rifle.
