    10/22 + ExtenZe

I gave my 10/22 a couple of ExtenZe pills. This is what I got.

It is a Green Mountain 28" barrel.

The factory stock has been routed to fit the barrel. The first few inches of the barrel was then bedded to help support it's extra barrel weight.

Yes, it shoots tight groups at 50 yards.

Very strange I have the factory 22 inch 10/22 you could only get at Wal-Mart.Have you looked into the benefit of such a long barrel on a rimfire? This is mine

      Cool looking rifles.

I read somewhere, I think it was Rusty Kidd, who tested to find the optimum barrel length for 22LR. They shot rounds over a chrono and started with a 24" barrel and shortened it by an inch each time. IIRC they found that 14" gave peak velocity and longer and shorter were slower. The writer said they started bulding guns with 18" barrels back bored to 14 to get the maximum veclocity. I'm sure that it varies with different ammo.

        Looks good!

@TMC: Is "back bore" opening up the barrel more after the 14" mark?

          ^^^ Yep.

28" is nice as there's a lot of the sniper guys over at the Hide that are dropping their 10/22's into a McMillan-type stock and the length at least makes it 'look' more menacing.

Glad to see another barrel length out there, as I went on a quest for >20" a while ago to no avail.

I've heard more or less the same thing as TMC regarding length. Back boring is opening up the barrel. You would drill it out larger than bore diameter from the muzzle end so that it would keep peak velocity without slowing back down due to drag in the barrel. And you get the legal length, and longer sight radius of the longer barrel. I'd be hesitant to do it over just using a longer barrel as it's pretty hard to get a clean hole and good crown four inches back. I know its a very popular design in paintball guns and a way to bring a little life into old abused rifles like milsurps.

Dont tell me thats the permanent position of the scope!

that front set of rings seems a bit off. But the bedding looks very cleanly done and the barrel looks great!

That's a .920 barrel correct? What did you use to widen the channel in the stock to accomodate it? I've debated doing this myself. Also, what material did you bed with?

You have sharp eyes. The ring mounts were the wrong size. They would not tighten down properly. After a few dozen shots, the scope moved forward and off of the mount.

It is a .920 tapered barrel. The barrel would not fit into the standard stock. I also wanted the barrel to free float.

I used Devcon Plastic Steel Putty, 10110 for the bedding. I have also used this stuff to bed my CZ452, Varminter.

Aguila hyper velocity is another animal. Read somewhere ~20" is what you need to get the advertised nearly 1800 fps velocity.
