need help. Want a backpacking 22 rifle. Advice?

So I would like to get a light weight 22 rifle that packs up easy. Perhaps a folding stock or one of the ones that split in half, or the ones that store in their own stock.I would prefer a large capcity detach mag but its not a deal breaker if it doesnt have it. A small scope would be nice.

The rifle would also...maybe....2nd as a bug out gun for the wife to cary. Not my primary b.o.g. but it would be easy to have plenty of ammo.....maybe..

The problem is I have never been much of a 22 guy. I have a marlin model 60 and a ruger mkIII and that was about all i ever wanted/needed.

I respectfully ask for you guys to help. I dont really know what 22 are in production. I am checking some of the major makers but if you know of a make/model or a combo with aftermarket parts I would greatly appreciate it.

Most of the take down .22's I've seen leave alot to be desired. The AR7's seem finicky. The M6's are single shots and hard to find nowdays. Browning use to make a removable barrel .22, probably expensive and hard to find. For the greatest functionality and reliability, I would go with a Ruger 10/22 with one of those buttler creek side folders. Just make sure its overall length is long enough, I dont believe it is with the short, 16" barrel.

You might take a look at the Marlin Papoose. It is a semi that breaks roughly in half. I believe you can get it in SS or blue finish. It comes with a soft sided zipper case that will float with the rifle inside it.

Ive got a Papoose that I find pretty reliable. Ive fired 50 rounds through a hole the size of a quarter at 7 yards, can keep it pretty tight at 15 as well. They were a bit harder to find for a while but Ive seen a few since I bought mine, including an older wooden stock model that looked pretty good compared to the synthetic.

The Papoose was the very first firearm I ever purchased 16 years ago. It's a great little gun that is pretty accurate considering it's a takedown. Very light too. I've brought it on a couple of hiking trips before.

If you find an old (they're all old, not made for years) Remington Nylon 66, buy it! They don't seem to have many mechanical issues until they are fired about a million rounds (literally)---only weigh about four pounds---hold 13 rds ammo (LR only)---don't do any tricks like folding or take-down---just very lightweight and accurate (adjustable sights!). The only negitives I can come up with are, very difficult to take apart (you WILL need a book) and the prices of nicer specimens are in collector ranges---look for a crusty old shooter. I recently paid $250. for a very clean, almost new one---about the price of a new 10-22 on sale.

The Henry AR-7 only comes in black now.

By all of the accounts that I have seen, the redesigned AR-7 that was released last year (with the orange insert in the buttstock) no longer has the problems feeding ammo that the previous generations had. Henry redesigned the magazines as well as the barrel where it mates with the receiver, with metal-to-metal contact in that area for a more secure fit.

I just started DROS on one last week, so I have not been able to shoot it yet. I decided to pick the AR-7 over the Papoose because it is much more compact when broken down and with the reliability issues addressed by Henry, there isn't a huge advantage in that area for the Papoose any longer. But I have no doubt that either would be a wise choice depending on what your needs are.

The current version is designed to hold three 8-round magazines in the stock (one in the action, and two in the magazine slots). It is not designed to hold magazines larger than this. That being said, there are 10-round and 15-round magazines made by National Magazine available, but they are designed for the original Armalite AR-7 and will not work in the Henry, AR-7 Industries, and Charter Arms versions. The current magazines from Henry are limited to 8 rounds (as in the original model) in order to preserve the compact nature of the firearm while it is stowed in the buttstock.
