    OCD Gun Cleaner Hits Jackpot

I just got this very old Rem 550-1 home, filthiest filth ive ever seen. Clogged with greenish grey junk, fibrous and paper-like in some areas, action barely opened. I have it all apart and scrubbed/soaked. Must be a pound of this weird stuff that came out of the action.

Ive never seen anything like it in a gun, I am wondering if wrong lube was used that cemented with the rimfire powders?

Now if I could just figure out where that spring sproinged to......under the fridge maybe?

I thought by the title and the "greenish grey junk" line, that your new rifle was stuffed with old money.

When they break-free dries, the goop congeals into a paper-like product. Very strange.

Fredieusa, you wanna see a pic of an old stock and a tub-o-parts?

Barrel is in good shape, bluing on the receiver is mostly gone, no rust or pitting though. Front sight is smooshed.

I am going to brown the metal, refinish the stock, practice my checkering on it.

I've seen worse closet guns. I helped a friend move his parents into a new place and his dad had a 12g bolt gun that was solid with lint and dust from front of bolt to about half way up. Needless to say it hadn't been shot in quite awhile. It's fun working on stuff that really doesn't matter how it turns out to practice on, of course it better when it turns out sweet though. Good luck can't wait to see how it turns out.
