what scope for your 17hmr

they guys, im a long time lurker and first time starting a thread. i just bought a savage 17hmr from the turners black friday sale and i was wondering what kind of optics you guys have on your 17hmr. i am looking at the bsa sweet 17 and cabela's pine ridge tactical scope. i dont want to spend much money on the scope but i also dont want a POS that will need replacement after a couple months. for the most part it will be used for plinking at 100-200 yards until i can find somewhere i can hunt with it, then ill use it for that. i have 10 days to decide what scope i want so let me know what you guys have.

I use a baush and lomd (now bushnell) 2.5 x 10 4200 for prairire dogs. I use this on my anshutz 1517. I have probably killed over 5000 prairire dogs with this set up over the years. works great.

I dont know what you consider "much money" but I got a Muller APT Mil Dot for my Savage 17hmr and I love it.You can fing then for about 135-160 on the web.I have yet to put the dogs down but I was making key holes on paper all day and I'm no shooter.http://mueller.geecarts.com/products...&sub=&type=176

I have a short neck so I needed something that can mount as far back as possible. With this known, I found most scope bodies to be too short and it wasn't possible to mount them far back enough for me. In short, I finally settled with a Leupold Legend 4-16x40. It had the longest scope body and still provided good enough image quality.

im trying to keep it under 100. i know having a good scope is important but its a .17 hmr and im only shooting out to 200 maybe 250 yards, how good of a scope do i really need for that.

Intensity scopes are what I run on all my rimfires. Nice glass, solid construction and all under $100. I think I paid $49 for the 3-9 and $69 for the 4-12's.

Ive had good luck with the sweet 17 series. I got 4 in a clearance bin that had been returned after christmas.Ive had them for two years now , and they are not the clearest scope Ive ever looked through but they track straight,and are repeteable. the only thing I dont like about them is that from the factory they were marked with yardages, both on the elevation knob and the objective adjustment. those yardages arent even close to what I findin normal useage. if you can just use the numbers as witness marks and not yardages it works fine. The Mueller APT is what I put on my Savage Mk II TR... it's a pretty solid piece of glass for $145 shipped (no tax in CA). It has a mil-dot reticle and exposed target turrets.

If you don't like (or need) the mil-dot reticle, the Mueller APV is an alternative for a bit less. The APV also lacks the exposed target turrets though, if that is something you might need. These scopes are pretty popular over on the rimfirecentral forums.

The Mueller would be a good choice and magnification is a must with the little 17 pill. I have one of the MK4 knock-offs and
while not the best it works ok. The 24x and ultra fine reticle are nice for small targets at long range.

scope for 17 HMR?

i use the BSA sweet 17 on my ruger 77/22 based 17 HMR...it, so far, has proven rugged, dependable and accurate.
