    American Rifleman on "Tactical .22s"

Anybody read the article in the December 2010 American Rifleman yet? They did a comparison of eight of the current offerings, and list all the specs, msrp, and the 50 yd. (10 round) groupings they got from a sandbag rest. The brand of the best grouping rifle might surprise some of you! Hint: It starts with the letter R. The Colt M4 didn't do as well as I thought it would in the comparison. One question I have is, why did they use the same test ammo in all but the Colt? My guess is that the results on the Colt might have been lower with the same ammo as the others, but not sure. My own M4 shoots the best groups with Winchester Wildcats compared to the CCI and Federal rounds that I have tried so far.

The Remington seems like a very solid platform, I fondled one at Turners before I settled on my 15-22. At < $300 I'd take it over all the others, however.

Yep, the Remington. I thought I would trick you guys into thinking it was the Ruger, but didn't catch you on it! They had some interesting comments regarding each of the rifles tested. I wasn't even aware of the Mossberg - it had a good price but that's about all.

yep, we're sneaky that way. My lil' Colt M Forgery shoots it's best with .22 HP's from Armscor Precision.

I enjoyed that article, read it last night. I've never shot any of the other guns in the article but my Ruger SR-22 is a buttload of fun! I just wanted a revamped 10-22....definitely didn't disappoint. It's accurate as he'll and isn't picky with ammo. I shoot it with irons. Tad heavier than a stock 10-22 but is WAY more ergonomic.

I found it interesting that the Remington had the best accuracy although they didn't do a real evaluation on what ammo each rifle may like. The Mossy was interesting mostly due to the price but obviously part of that is due to the large amount of plastic. In any case, someone looking for that style of firearm who would be happy with minute-of-soda-can @ 50 yds would not be a bad choice mostly because of price.

I would tend to go with the Ruger simply because I laid in a stash of pre-ban 25 rd Butler Creek mags before the ban hit here in Kalifornia---that and the 10-22 just seems to work all the time

Anybody know how the M&P 15-22 would stack up against them?

M&P 15-22 is strong if your own or plan to own an AR15 as it is the one the most resembles the AR controls. Allowing for it to be a good trainer (without buying a conversion kit) and save money over training with 5.56 ammo which of course is more costly.

i read all the reviews; they were certainly brief, but gave an overall view.

i tend to be as ruger fan myself but have been researching all of these.

i think if a person were considering an AR OTHER THAN AN A DEDICATED .22 LR, he should look to the CMMG or similar AR that will provide the lowers necessary to make changes. the CMMG, as one example, will provide the .22 LR on the lowers that will convert to centerfire for near the same price as the ruger or Remington.

Yea just came across it last night and what i found interesting is the HK 416 .22lr. Doesnt look bad at all but looking into it the barrel is done real cheap. Wouldnt mind getting one after they fix the barrel or im still sticking to my s&w MOE style .22lr!!!

I like the MossBerg not as plasticy as most would think for the price, actually when compared to how it felt and handled next to the Remington, it felt better i.m.o.

Also Turner's has told me the whole reason the Remington are as cheap as they are listed is because they are a closeout/discontinued model :/. I do know the Remingtons take most all AR furniture so they say.

The mossberg for a tacti-cool plinker for the price is then one to have, although now with this article i am tempted to get the remington is turners has anymore left.
