Training for accuracy .22 pistol or rifle?

I want to buy a .22lr firearm so I can practice at the range more often.

The two model I am looking at are S&W 22a or CMMG Quebec. I don't want this to be about the models I have chosen, just which would be more beneficial (a pistol or a rifle).

I need advice because I really want the rifle, which makes me biased about my decision. Which would best help me practice for better accuracy?

I don't own any rifles yet (I may consider getting the 223 upper a few years down the road) which is why I am leaning towards the rifle but it also brings up the obvious, since I am trying to be more accurate with my pistols, I should get the pistol. Does it make a big difference which I practice with or just get the one I enjoy because any shooting is practice?

    Thanks

    Good questions and thoughts.
I started out with just the pistol.
Then ammo prices got funny for my AR and I got the rifle as well.
What I ended up figuring out is that I like 22lr more then most other calibers.
Right now I am hooked on a the rifle and I am taking the Appleseed with it.
I even know which grn round is best for my rifle, how to use a sling and so on.
You will enjoy the practice. Oh and btw I am looking to buy the CMMG as well and I got the Browning Buckmark as the pistol

So you find the rifle more enjoyable? Do you think using a rifle has helped you with accuracy when going back to a pistol?

I also liked the browning buckmark, it was my second choice (basically whichever I find a better deal on). I've used the 22a before so I'm just biased with that model too lol.

You should get whichever you will use and get the most enjoyment out of. Practicing with a rifle will help your rifle skills, shooting a handgun will help your handgun skills. Shooting one will not make you better at the other. Each is its own art, in my opinion.

I find both enjoyable. But I am learning more currently because of the rifle. Basically NPOA

Thanks, that's exactly what I was wondering.

The skill in shooting a rifle accurately has very little to do with shooting a pistol accurately...also pistol shooting skills deteriorate more quickly

I would recommend the rifle first.
                1) IMO it is easier to become proficient and consistent with a rifle

                2) Rifle skills translate better across various platforms. FAL vs Mini-14 grip angle will make little difference. While 22/45 vs Neos vs s&w 617 will make a big difference.

                3) Because pistols are much harder to get right (read easier to get wrong), my frustration tolerance is lower with pistol.

As other posters have mentioned neither skill really helps the other. About the only two things that are the same are sight alignment/picture and using the pad of your finger.

some would argue pistols are a more challenging platform since you are offered fewer options for support and more reliance on technique/practice...

however, rifles at long range have many other technical challenges and requisite skills of their own. it really is a wash, imho.

the one thing i have been told repeatedly, which i have found to be true, regardless of platform, the raw basics of safety, grip, breathing, trigger control, sight picture, follow-through, etc. still apply. just remember the shot mostly happens before the gun goes bang. practice/trigger time is key!

good luck with your choice... faced with your same decision, i invested in both .22LR platforms to work on them both!
