It all depends on what you are shooting at. If you are shooting at something that requires some terminal energy, like squirrels, I'd say 75 - 100 yards. If you are shooting targets, you can shoot out to over 300 yards - so long as you can compensate for bullet drop. Bullet drop is about 7" at 100 yards for a 40 gr. .22 bullet traveling at 1000 fps. At 150 yards it is around 26", so it's dropping fast. And like stover said, it's about 40' at 300.Comment

Effective for what? Hunting? Target shooting? Just getting a bullet there? Under 100 yards does not take much, its about 6 MOA up from a 50 yard zero. 200 is around 26 moa.Comment

tons of info out there on the ballistics of .22LR, but in a short blurb, in most cases zeroed at 25yds, you are very effective to about 75yds. 100yd target shooting is not uncommon.
in fact, people target shoot .22LR out to 200yds with the proper setup (and patience).SCC CCW *326 Days, $1051.29*

according to the statement on the box, most .22 ammo is "dangerous" to 1 1/2 miles...
in the real world; for small game (up to coyote/fox size) 100 yds +-...NRA life member, US Army Veteran
i am a legend in my own mind...
we are told not to judge muslims by what a few do...yet, the NRA membership and firearms owners are ALL considered as radical...

If you are gonna shoot a coyote at 100yds+ you are gonna need to hit em in the eye for a humane kill. Anything in the body and they will just run off and maybe die later or be maimed. I don't think its too ethical to shoot an animal as large as a coyote at that range with a .22lr, maybe a .22 Magnum.
Yeah I know folks who say they take deer with a .22lr but shot placement is so critical that most of us can't make that shot. 5 mph of wind @ 100yds and we will all miss what we are shooting at unless we are really, really good.Comment
