    best model 10/22 to customize?

i was thinking about purchasing my first 10/22, but i definitely wanted to build on it and customize it. should i just buy a plain old 10/22 carbine and start working on parts from there?

this was my plan. change the stock so that it has a thumbhole. possibly change out the barrel with a tactical solutions barrel. but a rail mount for a simple duplex scope or maybe a cheap red dot for screwing around. my primary use it for simple plinking around the range and shooting steel spinning targets.

i'm sure this post has come up many a time, but your input would be great.

Rds? You don't have to have bull barrel if your plinking but it's always a plus. Buying a used 10/22 will help you save money but it's up to you.

        best model 10/22 to customize

As you'll soon find out, the 10/22 is probably the most customizable rifle around. You can invest 10s to 100s of $ in one depending on your taste and wallet. The 10/22 is basically a receiver that you can add to as little or as much as you desire.

Be patient and look for a new rifle on sale or used, in good condition, in a pawn shop. Then go to http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/index.php and learn what the 10/22 mavens have to say about working on this rifle.

Lastly. Get one, shoot it, get the feel of it, then figure out how you want to make it "better". You're entering a world of no return - enjoy.

Gem's right, the rimfire central guys know everything.

You don't even need to use Ruger parts. Aftermarket/custom parts are available for the whole rifle.

buy the cheapest and replace what you want. 1st thing your going to do is buy a new barrel. well the new barrel will need a new stock, unless you do it the hard way and take a 1" dowel and sand paper to fit the lsrger dia barrel.

Get just a receiver and go from there.

The last one I bought was $150 one from the 1980's. It was/is still in like new condition. I'm just sitting on it until I decide to build another one up. with a bit of hunting and asking around, you should be able to find something like this,

Yeah definitely try to get a used one in good condition or at least one on sale. Just bought one recently from a fellow calgunner. The price was fair and it was in like new condition. Prior to that I had been looking for a deal for a few months, so don't be in a hurry. There are tons of modifications for the 10/22 as you probably already know. And you seem to have an idea of how you want to start building it up. My advice is first and foremost, shoot the thing bone stock. Use the stock sights, get a good feel for it. Once you do that, whatever you want to do to it will come natural.

Get the older style with the smooth finish not the new "crinkle" finish, it flakes off. Also look for one with the metal trigger housing, unless you plan to replace the entire trigger. As said above get the cheapest one you can find and have fun. Check out www.coolguyguns.com Kidd makes the best barrels and triggers along with many other parts.
