    GSG Mystery Spring

I just finished cleaning my GSG and found this Mystery spring on the table when I was finished putting everything together. I took everything apart just as the book instructs you to, and the only thing that was out of place is that the one of the parts in the shown in the red square below had come loose and I had to jimmy it back into the spring and thread it back in. I have posted a picture of the spring I found as well. Any help you guys can give me would be great! I'm not to familiar with the internals of the GSG yet.

Having a GSG-5 and having the same "what is this left over spring?" thing happen to me, I would estimate that what you depict is the bolt-hold-open spring that goes into the left side of the receiver.

When disassembling the GSG-5, it can very easily fall out.

IIRC, there is a tread on ARF.com about it. It (in its natural shape, that is) just drops right back into place. Looks like you just might, maybe, possibly need a new one .

Oh, and the "Parts you found loose" (recoil spring guide rods) happen to me all the time on my GSG-5, despite the use of blue Loctite on them. They just seem to want to be loose.

Also, the recoil springs that go on the above mentioned guide rods are direction-specific.

The narrower end of the springs go toward the front of the gun. There IS a difference, I learned the PITA way...

I do like my GSG-5, but I would never, EVER buy another one.

Far too much over-engineering. The S&W MP-15 looks easier to deal with.

Looks like you're going to need another mystery spring there. Part #57 is the spring you'll need. You'll need to email this guy from ATI. If your GSG is under warranty, you might just get a free spring sent to you. I'm waiting on mine. They have great customer service. I spoke with Bilal.

Thanks for the help guys... If this is in fact the Bolt Hold Open Spring would that prevent the bolt from holding open when the gun is unloaded/loaded with a magazine in the mag well or not for that matter? The reason I ask is that I performed a dry fire test with an empty magazine in the well and I also loaded it and cycled through 10 rounds by working the charging handle (done outside in my backyard in a safe manner), and couldn't find any issues with ejection of the rounds or the bolt hold open.

uh oh...Could that be your firing pin spring? But there's a super tiny rod that connects to that and you didn't mention that.

Aw, rats! I was hoping it was just that lame spring on the left side.

              Any resolution???

I take it you took the firing pin housing apart. I think if you have the parts kit from GSG 5, you should have a spare spring in there and a tiny piece, which looks like a T, that goes into the spring.

I hope you didn't red loctite your firing pin housing yet. But you may want to take out the bolt carrier to see if your firing pin is functioning properly.

OK...After getting some regular sleep for a couple of days I revisited the GSG mystery spring issue tonight. TenSeven you were right it was the bolt-hold-open spring in the left side of the receiver. I was even able to straighten out the mangled one that I found and get it back in the receiver. Thanks everyone for you help!!! I will be at a Panoche shoot this weekend and you can bet I will be shooting the GSG like crazy!!!!

Here's a pic of the missing bolt-hold-open spring area on the receiver:
