    AR in .22 build questions..

i want to get another .22 but am not liking the guns out there in the AR platform so i am thinking of just building a inexpensive AR and buying a ciener bolt for it.stripped lower 115+CAR complete AR kit for 520+160 for conversion kit.
any legality's involved with the gun and not putting a bb on it ,would leo's be able to tell the bolt is a rim-fire??

i know total cost will end up being about 900,but i could use the lower on a different gun in later years or if my regular AR breaks down...

As long as its rimfire... No bullet button is required. The LEO can check the bolt to ensure it fires .22's...

My suggestion though... Consider a .22LR CMMG Upper (they can be had for ~$300)... Then a stripped lower + LPK... Your probably looking at $500-600ish...

Also the reason i would suggest a dedicated .22LR upper is the fact you couldn't possibly ever fit a .223 in there... So no LEO could ever make any stupid mistake (i would think)...

The only thing to remember is that the dedicated 22 barrel will have the twist rate better suited for a 22lr - 1/16 verus 1/7 or 1/9. You'll get better accuracy when shooting longer distances. But definitely a 22 built on a real AR lower will be more flexible in the future.

You could stick with your plan and use Aguilar SSS 60gr. They should stabilize in a 1/9 twist barrel.

Im getting a dedicated .22 upper for my AR.

            One of these CMMG models...

Im happy I didnt buy the ATI upper before I saw the CMMG. ATI upper is plastic vs metal on the CMMG.

Dedicated upper is the way to go... Just found the CMMG upper even cheaper here.

I got a CMMG .22 conversion kit for my AR. May not be as accurate as a dedicated .22 upper but is sure dang fun to plink for hours with! And whenever I have my conversion in I also have my BB wrench in ready to dump .22 mags which is perfectly legal

Also consider Spikes dedicated .22lr upper.

Get a Chiappa upper, like $250-$300 for a .22LR complete upper. Or spent $150 for a conversion bolt and magazine.

I've been wanting to ask that question myself.

To OP, check out CMMG's site, they've got barrels and even a device that locks the bolt back after the last round even a forward assist adaptor.

                            Re: Gas tube fouling

I would imagine so. I have a piston upper, and when I was running a conversion bolt I would find a lot of crap building up in the regulator after 500 rounds or so. The simple fix for that is to just close the regulator so nothing escapes through the gas port. Might not be so simple with a DI system, but it also might not be anything to be concerned about.
