I had my nine year old, whom I've taken shooting before with a .22, signed up for this class http://www.oaktreegunclub.com/classes/first_steps.asp at oaktree gun club. It was a great class. my son got two hours of NRA classroom instructions on safety and then two hours of range time. The class accommodates up to 4 people but my sons class was just him. Brian was a great teacher, salty and old school, the way I like them and really did a great job with my kid. I had brought the 10/22 to the class but my boy spent most of his time running Brians Mossberg 44, a dream gun. He did have him spend some time on the ruger to learn how to run it properly but his best shooting was from the 75 year old work horse. A great class for kids and newcomers. They walk away with a healthy dose of safety and technique plus some great literature that even I am learning from. cost for the 4 hours=$80.00. Qualifies for NRA basic rifle.

Appleseed is next on the list. I want him to learn the history the way it was. Not the way it now is taught. I've got to give him a few more years to grow a little physically and mentally for the Appleseed, but it is on the to do list. Sad thing is I've instructed him not to discuss his handling of firearms with friends for fear of canceled play dates from our mostly liberal anti 2A crowd. when we went camping this year with some friends their kids told my son about shooting with their dad in Iowa my boy did a dance and asked me if he could tell them about his experiences. Sad but funny.Comment
