    problem with savage 62/64

i bought an el cheapo savage 62/64 with the tasco scope a few wks ago from big 5 when they had the sale. i am new to guns, but i think there is something wrong with the gun. i have shot probably 200 rounds thru it at the big 2 foot targers at 50 yards. with the scope, i have yet to even hit any part of the target. i hve tried adjusting the scope, but no help. shooting over iron sights, i have probably hit some portion of the target maybe 10 times out of 40 shots. i am in no way an expert shot but i can hit the bullseye a few times with my saiga 7.56. i just took the gun apart and the only thing i found wrong was one of the screws connecting the stock and the barrel was a little loose. anybody have ideas? also does anyone know if you can return a gun to big 5? or anyone have info on warranty claims to savage?

Try this. Put a soda can out at 50 yards. Put the scope on the rifle at minimum magnification. Shoot at the can five times and see if the dirt kicks up near the same place for each shot. If it does then adjust the scope and shoot again. Repeat until you can hit the can. If you can't ever hit the can, remove the scope and try the iron sights in an effort to determine if its the scope or the rifle. If you can hit the can (or near it), then move to a target and fine tune the scope or iron sights. Best to do this from a bench with good support for the rifle.

I always do this when I either put a scope on a rifle for the first time or when I change scopes. Sometimes the point of aim and point of impact can be off by a foot or more. On high magnification you may not even see where the bullet hits.

If you can't get on target then give Savage a call and explain what's going on. I understand Savage has very good customer service.
