    10/22 Questions

So I just picked up a new 10/22 a bit over a week ago ($238 after DROS and taxes at Cabela's. Could've gone with a cheaper Marlin 795, but oh well). I'm wondering, how much should I expect to pay for the simple 10rd rotary mags? The cheapest I could find them for was $11 on MidwayUSA's site (probably going to get only 2 of them). Also, are there any suggestions for cleaning supplies?

So far, it seems to run Remington cheap Golden Bullet Value Packs just fine, along with some of my dad's 20y.o. Federal .22LR cartridges. I just picked up a Winchester value pack a few days ago, so I'll be checking that out next time.

Edit: It doesn't run GB fine. Apparently my experience with rental guns has skewed my perception on reliability. I've been getting 1-2 FTE's every 2 mags. Hopefully this cheap pack of Winchester ammo I got will run better. I clearly have much to learn

    Some pics:

Eventually thinking getting sling swivels, and I'll probably throw on Tech-Sights at some point. No other modding plans for it in the near future aside from that.

Oh, and I haven't introduced myself. I've been lurking the forums for a while now; was directed here by other CA members from TheHighRoad forum.

The sale price that MidwayUSA has right now ($11.49) is a really good price for 10/22 magazines.

I use a pull through, flexible cable type cleaning system to clean the bore of my 10/22 to avoid damaging the muzzle crown with a cleaning rod. I've never used a metal brush on the bore, just cloth patches. A .22LR doesn't need much to clean the bore. I have the Otis cleaning system, but I think the cheaper Patchworm kit that Midway sells would be perfect for just a 10/22. There are even cheaper do it yourself pull through cables you can make with fishing line.

That's a very common complaint with Remington Golden Bullets. They are even less reliable in all of my .22s.

10/22's are awesome. Tech Sights are also great. I have a set on mine and love 'em.
As an experiment, once you get comfortable with the rifle, shoot some groups from a sandbag then remove that barrel band clamp and see if your group size doesn't get cut in half. Pretty common trick on the wooden stock models so it may be worth a try with your composite stock. If it doesn't improve the group size, put the clamp back on.

          Take care,
          Dave

You are going to have to experiment w/ different brands of ammo. A lot people like the bulk Federal HP ammo sold @ Walmart. A step above that is CCI mini-mags high velocity 40 grn round nose.

What kind of jams are you getting?

Mine eats the wallmart federal bulk pack with zero problems. If you want mor accuracy, my groups shrink in half with Wolf MT ammo. If you have FTE's with the federal ammo (the golden bullets cause many people problems) a $12 Volquartsen extractor will usualy cure it. $11 is an great price for mags, I paid $14 from Midway last month. For cleaning the barrel, I like the Hoppes bore snake. Since you have to clean a 10/22 from the muzzle with a rod, you risk damaging the crown. Stick with a pull through, pulled from the chamber out.

It may just need some break-in, but brand new 10/22s may need the extractor hook face (where it grabs the case) cleaned up a bit for a sharper, bigger bite.
You can fix the original one with a file in ten minutes, or get a Power Custom or Volquartson extractor for a drop-in fix.

                $11.49 is a great price for a 10/22 magazine.

The jams I'm getting usually involve something being fed improperly, at which point I eject the mag, pull the bolt back, and shake out the round.

Inflation sure brings a tear to my eye, looking at the other prices people picked their 10/22s up at (not like that could've been helped in my case, considering I just barely became old enough to buy one 3 years ago). At the moment, I'm looking at roughly $130 in spare mags (2) and upgrades, including sling swivels, Tech Sights, and a Volquartsen target hammer.

The new 10/22s often have a very sharp corner / edge right at the chamber mouth.
This tends to either shave a little lead off the bullet, or wedge it during feeding.
Knock the sharp edge off the chamber mouth....use a drill bit or de-burring tool by hand only.
Take off as little metal as possible while still blunting the corner.
Also, new 10/22s often have a very rough surface on the recoil spring guide rod.
This causes the charging handle to bind and slow down the bolt movement.
Smooth down the guide rod surface as needed, be sure to oil the spring and rod.

my 10/22 eats RGB just fine. I put 500 rounds through it every weekend....
For these RGB, I have noticed one thing: ones from wal-mart and ones from big 5 or turners are different packaging. I never got mine from Wal-mart because the box looks bad. Could it be different product line?

I think there may be 2 different packs. There is a solid-green box on the Remington site, but the one I bought has pictures of individual rounds covering the top lid of the box.

Is ~$238 what most of you guys would;ve paid? I slightly regret not getting a bolt-action .22LR to start learning with, but I guess should be happy enough if I got a good price on this.

$238 OTD is not bad for a 10/22. That is about what my store around here sells them for during a sale with tax and DROS. You might have gotten one cheaper if you put a used one but probably not that much cheaper.

Those guys who paid $50 probably bought them right sometime in the 60's or something. I bought mine about 7-8 years ago and probably paid about $150 for mine.

I wouldn't regret not getting a bolt action 22. Lots of people shoot 10/22's as the 22 rifle. I love mine and shoot it all the time.

Wow that's a good price. I paid $219.99 (before tax & DROS) @ turners, and I thought that was good. I run The Federal Bulk packs and had Zero issues so far. I bought a Universal cleaning kit for about $20 bucks, u can get it at Turners or Buds, Cabelas, etc. but I recommend buying separate cleaning patches, cheap ones rip very easily.
