I have one that is pre-lock and has a 4" barrel. When I recieved it, it had been rode hard and put away wet. It was out of time on three of the ten cylinders, and just in general it looked rough.

I got it cheap so I sent it back to S&W and had them install a 6 shot cylinder and now it is by far my favorite revolver. I mostly am a revolver guy so it was an easy decision.

It is very accurate, you can feed it any kind of .22 ammo you like (I've used CB caps in my garage, but I its louder than I feel comfortable using). It has just been great. I use it so much I put my Browning Buckmark up for sale as it never gets used.

They are a little expensive compared to the Rugers/Brownings. If you prefer shooting revolvers, I would definately get one, or if you can find it, a Model 17 or 18.

    HTH and good luck.

The 617 is a gorgeous wheel gun, exceptional quality and it is a bit pricey but well worth the money.

If you're just looking for something cheap to shoot, I'de get the Ruger 22/45. They hqve been sold new for as cheap as $239 and usually go for less than $300 even regular priced. If you're looking for a revolver trainer, then the 617 is nice....expensive but nice. Got my 2 for about the $400-$425 range used some years back before prices went nuts. One is an older pre-lock and mim 6 shooter and the other is a lock 10 shooter. Both are fun to shoot and save me on .38 Special ammo.

The only .22 revolver I have enjoyed shooting more was a Colt Diamondback. I am considering adding a Model 18 in 4 inch barrel to my collection at some point since it does not have the full underlug of the 617. As well as my 6 inch barrel Model 17 balances, I still like the 617 more.

                  YES!

It is fun to shoot. All the new shooters in my family start with my 617 10 shot. With the speed loaders we even do timed multiple targets.

Why limit yourself. There is a large fun factor with .22's.

I am thinking about a 617 for tactical metal target competition. What made you go with the 4" barrel over the 6" model? Thanks.

Where did you find speedloaders? The only ones I have seen are for the older 6 shot ones.
