I am going to shoot in the ruger rimfire championships in november, but i dont have a 22 pistol yet. I am leaning toward a mark 3 22/45 with a 4.5 fluted s/s bbl and fiber optic front sight, any thoughts? what mods are usually needed to be competetive? are red dots faster then open sights, do people put comps on 22 pistols? does it help? any help is greatly appreciated!

I use a SS Ruger MK III Target 5 1/2" barrel with a C-More red dot optics.(Open class) I have the Volquartsen trigger parts in it and the mag disconnect removed. I think the red dot is faster when you shoot the farther smaller steel targets. I use the same red dot on my Rifle. I use Federal Target match ammo, seems to work well. Will be at the Rimfire challenge also. Good Luck ! -
Thanks ego, I baught a 22/45 mark 3 with the 4.5 inch fluted bbl and all of the VQ parts
and plan to remove the mag disconnect as well. where did you get the optics mount for your Cmore? what is the hot setup for rifle? I have a 1022 with a tactical solutions bbl and a boyds stock, I have the oversized mag drop and bolt latch and a VQ trigger currently using an adco red dot.Comment

I have two S&W Model 41s...best bare none. I shoot them now in Bianchi. Clark custom barrel on one with a Red dot,5.5 inch heavy barrel and iron sights on the other...
TURNING and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

I picked up a GSG off that prize table last year. If I remember correctly I was running a marvel unit 1 top end on an aluminum frame kimber and a 10/22. I would definitely recommend limited class (iron sights) unless you're used to shooting an open gun. I liked the fact that the match was a little more run and gun than normal steel challenge matches at our club.
If you do want to mount an optic pick your mount carefully. I've seen several lately at matches that wouldn't hold zero because of the mounts. Allchin makes the best C-more mounts I've seen.I'm a big old, bourbon-soaked cigar-huffing ***, as God in his infinite wisdom meant me to be. - Charlie Sheen.Comment

I have shot local steel challenge matches in the past with my Rugar MKII, bull barrel, Volquartsen trigger, grip, extended slide release and mag release. The Volquartsen trigger change was the best add-on! Very smooth, crisp and the wide trigger feels great! Good luck and have fun!sigpic
