It's available as a complete upper or as a complete rifle.

Unfortunately Alexander Arms does not sell complete rifles to California. So you'll have to use a middleman. The complete rifle costs $1175

The complete upper is available to Californians. It costs $725.

I thought this round wasn't good for a semi auto gun.. I can't explain why, I just remember reading that here one time. Or at least I think I read that.

Yeap, Remington stated that it was not safe in a semiauto

Major ammunition manufacturers have issued safety notices concerning the use of .17 HMR ammunition in semi-auto firearms. According to the manufacturers, firing .17 HMR ammo in semi-auto firearms could result in property damage or serious personal injury and should be immediately discontinued.
Remington has issued a recall of its .17 HMR ammunition, as well as its Model 597 .17 HMR semi-auto rifle as there is no safe .17 HMR ammunition available for the rifle.

Remington is providing free shipping to return Model 597 .17 HMR semi-auto rifles to Remington along with coupons to replace the rifle with another Remington firearm. Consumers will receive a $200 coupon for synthetic stock Model 597 rifles, and a $250 coupon for laminate stock Model 597 rifles.

is it possible that AA would have addressed this issue?

It's possible that they have some more delay built into the action so that chamber pressures will drop before it blows back. There's plenty of room in the receiver to work with but I don't know how they would go about it. That is the problem with the auto loaders right? They blow back the cartridge before the pressure has dropped leading to a danger of ruptured cases etc.?

Damn, That's the first time I heard of this. I own a 17hmr Remington 597, but for only $200, I'll keep my "dangerous" weapon. I think I already experienced the dangerous situation. One round blew the back of its case off, and took the ejector with it. Scared the crap outa me, I'm lucky I shoot right handed. I have about 500 rounds through it since, with no more problems.

I wonder why the 17hmr is bad, but the 22mag is ok?

Not all semi-autos are trouble with the 17. Volquartsen has had a semi-auto .17 all along with no problems reported. I don't think the problem is the cartridge, it's the rifle. I have faith in AA that their .17 semi-auto is safe. Now if they could only drop their prices in half.

no doubt its a nice upper but i think they should price uppers in correlation with the caliber theyre in... u can get a nice 17 hmr rifle for half that price. same with 22
