    10/22 + APV = mount + rings inquiry

So I've read and searched and read searched and read, on and on and on and am just lost.

I hope you guys can lend a kind hand with suggestions.

I have a 10/22 carbine (1151) and plan to get a mueller apv scope. When I bought this rifle, the guy at the shop mentioned not to use the ruger stock mount if/when I decide to mount a scope (he said it was one of the worst offered).

    So here goes:
    1. specifically which is the best mount for the apv scope?
    2. should i remove the rear sights, if doing so? pro's/con's?
    3. specifically which are the best rings for this scope?

would def appreciate a 'top 3' if when lending a kind suggestion/2 cents. in return i offer a nickel

    TIA!

On a STOCK Ruger? The Problem is the receiver, NOT the mount -- it is cheap aluminum
I have used the Leupold mount and the Volquartsen mounts:

Volquartsen screws into actual bull barrel:

But the ruger rail will worl fine with a $100 scope...

The Ruger supplied rail is fine. The knock on the 10/22 rail is the top of the receiver finish and shape affecting the fit not the quality of the rail. Just make sure the screws don't go too far inside the receiver and drag on the bolt. You can always take it off and get a new one. No big deal.
Ring height is a little subjective but I will give the basics as I know them. On Weaver style rails most rings are height wise measured from the rail top and the scope bottom in the area you would mount the rings. In general get it as low as possible but due to stock shape and other factors you may want something different. Take some modeling clay and mount the scope where you want on the rail and then measure from rail top to scope bottom. Don't blow the bank on rings for a rimfire Mueller combo. I didn't get rings with my Mueller.
Don't take off the rear sight until it interferes. Why remove a wart that is not a problem.

I have a Mueller 4.5-14 x 40 mm APV Scope with sunshade, LNIB, only used once.

If you are interested $100 FTF.

I usually buy the weaver tip off base for my ruger rimfires. They're about 6-11 bucks and I have never had one move. I have 3 10/22's and a ruger 96/22 with weaver bases and they are rock solid.

I wouldnt hesitate getting a volquartsen barrel-mounted base if I felt like spending the cash. I have had great results with the weaver base, and green mountain barrels, so I dont see the need for spending the money on the VQ base.

Anyone know of a longer rail, I have a rb evoluton 2 stock and I'm trying to compensate for the difference in height between the receiver and forearm by putting a rail to cover the full receiver.

forgive my ignorance, what is the 'knock' you mentioned?
where is a reputable place to get a good set of rings?
                which rings are highly recommended?
i asked the question regarding the rear sight, out of concern, after mounting the scope if it might hit the rear sight.

can you suggest a place to get the rings?
also, what do you consider 'nice' set of rings?

The 10/22 receiver top is not flat. Some believe that the surface where the mount goes is not square and level and varies from unit to unit. They believe that it is so severe that it affects the way the mount sets on the receiver. Not helping is the paint used. These are folks that have hundreds if not thousands of dollars in their guns and they want perfection. Ain't going to get perfection in a cheap production gun! Just use the factory supplied rail mount it is fine. Unless machined in the receiver I am not a big fan of screw mounted tip off rails. Sort of takes away the smallness to screw mount a tip off instead of machining it in. Ruger has supplied two types of rail mounts over the years. First the tip off mount. A small dovetailed rail about 3/8th" wide. The small size makes it look good on a smallish rimfire and people all over the world use a similar style 11mm rail. It is a little small for a big scope but looks good and holds fine for the small scopes most choose. Scope rings for the tip off type are more limited than the Picatinny/Weaver type.
Picatinny/Weaver rails come with the newest 10/22. These will have the most options for mounts. They are designed for CF rifles and will hold better although the tip off hold is adequate for a rimfire.

where is a reputable place to get a good set of rings?
In rimfire rings are rings. First see if your scope comes with rings and try them. You will know if they are to high or low and can judge the next purchase. I have a box full of rings so I can experiment to get what I want. I would not suggest a Mueller for your first scope. I have had no luck with them and consider them junk and a waste of money. Get something that comes with rings that fit your mount type. Go to Midwayusa they have a good tech section on each ring and it gives height. While it will most likely clear your stock sights nobody can tell you if your scope will clear the stock sights or if it will fit your face stock interface. You will just have to try it.

With Computer controlled machines cranking out rings almost any will do. This is a rimfire and you will not be shooting at 1k yards so most any rings and mounts will work. There are at least 1 million 10/22s running the factory rail and cheap mounts with small cheap WalMart 3-9X32 scopes. They must be doing something right.
