i know with a .357 mag you can use .38 special ammo, so my question is, can you use .22lr with a gun chambered for .22 mag?

The Short Answer: No.Luck favors the prepared.
The original battle plan did not survive initial contact with the enemy.
"The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt -
No.
Both use the same diameter bullet but different diameter cases.
On a .22 Mag, the case is larger in diameter than a .22lr.
In a .22 Mag, the bullet fits inside the case like centerfire ammo.
For .22LR, Short etc, the case and bullet are the same diameter.
The .22lr bullet has a "heel" or knob that sticks out the back.
The heel is smaller in diameter than the bullet and fits into the case mouth.
The case mouth is than crimped into the heel to hold the bullet in place.
Your next question is what happens if I fire a .22lr in a .22 mag gun.
Depends on the gun, but most likely there will be a case rupture and hot gases and brass shreds going everywhere.
Don't do it.
(I guess I am the long answer guy).
