    Which .22LR AR?

So... Which way to go? I've been juggling this for awhile now...

    1. Ruger SR-22
    2. S&W 15-22
    3. OLL .22 build

    Affecting factors:

I have several 10/22's and many mags (standard and extra/hi capacity) which will work in the SR-22.

I already have a OLL and the componants to build a complete lower, I would just need to buy an upper and mags to go the OLL route.

In my shoes, which way would you go?

I would build the OLL. In fact, I just ordered a .22 upper after experiencing the disappointment of the .22 conversion bolt. Not that it isn't fun, but if you value accuracy, it leaves much to be desired.
I wouldn't even bother with a .22 AR. Although lots of people seem to love them, they just seem...cheap.

From my Personal Experience as an happy owner of the S&W M&P15-22, I would have to suggest it for the best AR platform in .22lr. I know many other Cal-gunners here will agree with me on that, for the most part. It's not cheap to me, but does feel toy like in your hand, but I love the lightweight of the S&W.

Depends what exactly you want, and how much you want to spend.

I LOVE that part about the M&P!

I dont get why some people equate light with bad!
People will spend money on fluted or carbon fiber barrels to save weight, or rant and rave of their awesome polymer pistol, but somehow in the M&P this is a bad thing ?

Either way, the thing is PLENTY tough. Ive knocked mine arround quite a bit and even accidentally dropped from a considerable height, and its fine. Not even a mark on her as a matter of fact.

No, it wouldnt be my first pick to use to rifle butt somebody, but no AR design would be either PERIOD.

anyways, with that said, I vote
        M&P 15-22

.22 upper (ranked less because the cost / performance ratio isnt there compared to the M&P)

and SR-22 last, being that you already have 10-22s, why buy another?

I was concerned that the S&W wasn't steel all around and wouldn't take a beating... but my buddy seems to really like his. I have the goodies for a few more complete lowers, so would just need an upper & mags to go the OLL route. With the SR-22, the attraction was an AR platform that uses 10/22 mags - since I have plenty, not to mention the simple but solid 10/22 action.

Thanks for the comments boys... I'll keep juggling this a bit and let ya know where I land.

The Ruger SR-22 is a 10/22, not an AR. It doesn't even attempt to be one (at least one would think because of the control layout/trigger).

You can also consider a conversion kit if you plan on a 5.56/.223 AR.

I'd go with the MP15-22 is you can get it for $400 or so.

I actually bought a CMMG upper without the bolt, since I already had their conversion kit. And that(the conversion) - despite its accuracy shortcomings - has worked flawlessly for me. I think their complete .22 uppers start at $365 or there abouts, and you can upgrade the mags now to function the bolt catch on empty. Hard to beat that price.
If you already have a stripped lower and parts kit, you're already halfway there.

Well, without the proper 1/16 twist in the barrel, it just won't stay accurate out past a certain distance. I find that distance to be as little as 25 yards at the local indoor range. Bench shooting, I think I'm capable of MAYBE 1.5" groups on a good day with the conversion(.5" with .223), and that doesn't include the flyers, which sometimes go as far as 3-4" outside what I would consider a "normal" group. It can be frustrating if you're just trying to get a nice tight group, but if you're just there to slay some paper bodies, it's still a good time.

I would think that you'd get a much better grouping with that barrel than I do with my 16" 1/9.

it definitely will. Lets be realistic here, these are all .22's we are talking about!
Im pretty sure you wont be fighting any wars with one of them (at least I hope you dont plan on it)
