    Recommendations for .22lr Automatic

I'm looking for a .22lr automatic like a P22 or Mosquito, did not know if someone can give me other ideas?

I have heard about reliability issues with both guns so if there is something better out there, then let me know, please.

I've shot both the Mosquito and the P22. Both are fine pistols however I found the mosquito to be a bit finicky with ammo. Some hollowpoint rounds do have some difficulty feeding and you will have to play with the springs and ammo combination to find a good combo. Both firearms have a significant trigger pull even in single action. The more target oriented pistols offer a higher aftermarket trigger kits and ability to customize, especially the Ruger. I think it really comes down to preferance. Also take in to account how they feel in your hands. My suggestion would be to handle each of the pistols in question. The Sig has a larger grip frame when compared to the Walther and that may just make the difference.

S&W 22A. I have had one for several months now and it will shoot and cycle any ammo that I have used. Federal bulk, Winchester bulk, Blazers, Centurion, Aguila HV, Federal Lightning and Federal American Eagle. Never a faiure to fire, feed or eject. I suck with a pistol so I can't comment on its accuracy but other reviews have lauded its accuracy. At 15 yards I can put em all in a 6" cirlce, good enough for me. Its extremely easy to field strip and clean and has a lifetime warranty from S&W. Paid $300 OTD.

Heavy pistol for a 22, feels more like a 9mm or .45 in the hand. Nuttin fancy about it. Has a nice weaver rail integrated on top of the barrel. Suggest you find a gunshop (Turner's usually has them) and handle it. Craftsmanship is not up there with the Rugers or other higher dollar pistols but for a plinker or casual target shooting, its up to the task. Just my $.02.

PS: I think you mean semi-automatic

Jeff, I know you're itching to get either one now but read some reviews first. My brother have a P22 and don't have anything good to say about it. Can't comment on the mosquito but I've read some horrible stories as well. If course there are positive reports from other owners as well like maddoggie.

I have Browning Buckmark Camper and very accurate and reliable but I don't know where you can buy one. You might get lucky in the market forum or go check Turner's, they have a 22LR on sale. I heard good things about that pistol as well.

Any Ruger, Buckmarks are great, Berreta NEOS are pretty good to. The only Sig 22 I would buy would be the Trailside by they are getting harder to find. Persionally I wouldnt buy a SW 22A, the ones I've seen shot have been jam-a-matics and finicky on ammo. If you want a SW 22lr get a model 41 or 422.

                      ^^^^^This!

When I worked at an indoor range, I saw examples of P22s and Mosqitos literally start falling apart after 25000 rounds. Rugers and Brownings don't do that and they shoot better too! Of course, you can always go with an old High Standard or S&W 41.

                          jvpark,

I too suggest you invest in a Ruger pistol. They come in a wide variety of configurations to fit your preference. They're built like tanks and will last longer than you will. Top quality all the way!!!

My P22 pistol target is nice but it has NO target sights but does have a nice compensator on the end. Why they only put 3 dots on a target pistol I couldn't say.

Unfortunatly I can't give you any opinions on the Sig "Mosquito" as it's a pretty expensive little pistol for my casual shooting.

I don't suggest you get a Browning cuz every 500 rounds you have to change out a small recoil buffer and if your having a good time it can wear out and jam yor pistol. They have excellent ergonomics and has good weight for semi casual target shooting AND has excellent target sights.

Except for the Sig "Mosquito" I have all three and that's my opinion.

Is that the one with small hole where the rod goes into?

ETA - That doesn't seem to sound right.

Ruger MKIII in any of its configurations. Proven design over many years.
