    Marlin scope help

went to wal mart today and found a Tasco brans scope 3-9x40mm for $31. Is that too much of a scope for a .22 rifle or is it okay dont want to spend too much and want a better scope than a fix sight one with more view. thanks

I use a 25 power scope 9-25 on my match 22... I think 9 is a to little for my taste bur for shooting squires its should work great. Did u check and make sure that the scope was not made for air rifles? or made for 22? Should say on the box. Get the flip up covers for it too, few bucks and will keep the scope much cleaner bec yr more likely to close them rather than pulling out the elastic covers it comes with...

it just says for rifles. they have a centerpoint one for like $65 and it says for .22s. does it matter if it says for .22s or not?

Yup. It'll be a Weaver mount unless it says '22 rifle' or 'airsoft'. Something ike that.

The Marlin uses a 3/8" dovetail. But don't hesistate on a scope - you can get rings for cheap. Almost all scopes are 1" diameter.

        Check out rimfirecentral.net

The WM scopes are crap, I've heard way to many stories of them breaking. I recommend you save for a Simmons 22mag, which can be had for around $50. As for the rings, most rimfire scopes come with the dovetail mounts.

Simmons probably has the best reputation for a low-end scope.

And even if you get a 3-12x - don't expect the scope to go higher than 9x without distortion (in these low-end scopes). But really - you're shooting a 22LR....

Which model of Marlin do you have and what will you use it for? I have everything from a 3-9x up to an 8-32x. The smaller one for hunting and the larger one for target work out to 100yds. There are a number of good scopes for under $125 for those of us who just hunt, plink and casual target shooting. The $600+ Leapolds are great but do you really, really need that for a rifle whose effective range is at most 100yds? Make a good choice based on use so you only have to buy once. Ask me how I know?

trickyvic mentioned the Simmons 22mag - which has the 3/8" dovetails and fits right on a Marlin.

                      22 Scopes and parallax

Most centerfire scopes have their parallax set at 100yrds. A 22 scope will generally have a 50 yrd parallax. Consider the distance you intend to shoot. The best option is an AO scope like a BSA Sweet 22 with adjustable parallax. If you check around the internet sites you can find a Sweet 22 refurbished for the $ you are talking about spending. They are nice scopes. I have a 3x9 on my Ruger 10-22 and a 6x18 on my Savage bull barrel bolt gun. I use them at Appleseed shoots, they are at 25 meters. The nice folks a Leupold make a dandy one for about $450 buy it and if you don't like it you can send it to me for Christmas!
You do not have to be crazy to hang out with me. I'll train you!

The Tasco scopes I have seen in 3-9X40 have a parallax setting of 100 yards. It won't be in good focus at 50 yards or less. Either get an adjustable objective scope (AO) or check the specs for parallax setting. For rings just use the 3/8ths dovetail rings that come with most rimfire 50 yard parallax scopes, they will be fine. If you spend more and don't get rings look at BKL rings.

+1 on the Simmons 22mag scope. Remember you get what you pay for. This is quality on the low end of price.

The Simmons 22mag parallax is set at 50yrds, but I have no problems with it at 100.

If you are willing to spend a few bucks more for the BSA Sweet 22 with adjustable parallax as recommended by foesgth, it is also a a great option.

I rarely shoot .22's much over 100 yrds, so the Simmons has been a great choice for my Marlin.
