    10/22 car carry in CA?

My sister is moving to CA tomorrow and we would feel better if she could carry a weapon with her. My dad and I were thinking about sending her with her 10/22 to carry in her truck with her.

Is it legal in CA to carry a long gun in a vehicle with loaded 10 round mags, assuming the mags are not inserted into the rifle?

Does a Ruger 10/22 need to be registered?

It does not need to be registered.

It is legal to carry it in a vehicle as you describe (unloaded) but it needs to be inside a locked container so that your sister will comply with the federal GFSZ law whenever she happens to drive within 1000 feet of a K-12 school.

Also, the mags must be limited to 10 rounds or less. If it is possible to put in more than 10, it cannot be brought into the state (unless she possessed the mags within CA prior to 1/1/2000).

Seriously? A rifle has to be in a locked container?

Yes, if traveling through a school zone. Either in a locked container or in a locking gun rack. That's actually true in all states although it is rarely enforced. You can click the link above (this one) and read the law if you like.

JMHo. I don't think a 10/22 would be much help. While it's better than nothing, maybe some pepper spray or a tazer would be better. By the time you get to a rifle, swing the thing around to aim, you've pretty much lost the advantage. Is she comfortable with a handgun? If so that would be the best. Handgun with knowledge how to use it, and situational awareness is her best protection. HTH c good

I don't think the OP is asking about using the 10/22 as a defense weapon in his car...just about transporting it legally into CA.

NO, I think he is saying as a "defense weapon" , by his opening sentence"My sister is moving to CA tomorrow and we would feel better if she could carry a weapon with her."

Is it against the rules to have a defense gun in the car? It would be a 10/22 .22 magnum, but whatever.

It depends on the type of gun and how it is transported. These topics in the wiki will give you a good overview:

.22lr = bad for defense, you'll only angry your attackers, just get an any kind of Centerfire pistol.

A handgun outside of a locked container will violate CA law. Inside of a container, it will likely be useless for defense. A rifle need not be locked up under general CA law, just unloaded.

So only the GFSZ laws (CA and federal) apply. She may want to take her chances with that. If a school were built ON the interstate, at 70 mph (103 fps) she would be in range for only about 20 seconds. AND these laws require that the individual know, or have reasonable cause to believe, that they are in a school zone.

There are not that many people who will in fact keep on coming after being shot 1-10 times with .22LR Magnums. Plus a rifle makes a better club than a handgun.

I'd much rather have a 10/22 than nothing.
Perhaps that is all that is available for her to use.

man, a 22lr can do some damage. We're not talking bb guns here. Its a gun that can kill you.
She can drive with it in the back or front, although the back seat or floor is preferred to avoid a cop having a bad day. Unloaded at all times.
The locked container only applies to school zones, and is more a precaution than anything.

Hey bigtwin...my bad... You are right. i just figured someone would not choose a .22lr as a defense weapon in a car...the whole concept of a weapon in your car for defense is kind of taboo in CA. If you get pulled over whatever you do do not say you are carrying the rifle for defense..

Just imagining a scenario where you might have time to actually grab and load a rifle with efficiency in such closed quarters seems unlikely. Not to mention actually scoring a hit under the pressure of an attack. While Im sure a .22 could certainly stop someone if needed, I think pepper spray or something like that would be much preffered in a defense situation. Plus you dont have to keep that unloaded or locked up around any kind of zone.
