10-22 is pretty durable as is.I think removing that much material could weaken the reciever. If it were steel instead of aluminum,I think it would be fine.

dunno how you will get it to work since the guide rod/spring is located on the side you want the left side charging handle to be.

only choice i see is to get a custom built charging handle that bends over the top of receiver to the left side.

I think the OP wants to mill a slot in the left side of the reciever so a charging handle sticks out that side. Would be easy to do, if you look a the recoil spring/charging handle of a 10/22 you see the rod slides through one end of the charging handle, this handle fits in a slot on the bottom of the bolt. The rod stays in position. There is no reason, if there is a slot on the left side of the reciever, that a charging handle could be machined so it stuck out both sides. You knwo how the charging handle/guide rod and spring assembly looks like an "L" when its removed... it would look like a "T" instead. I think the reciever of a 10/22 is massivly overkill for a .22lr, i doubt a 3/16" wide slot that is about 1 1/2 long would be an issue. Sounds like a cool project!

Will there be legal issues since the reciever itself is to be modified?

Nothing illegal about modifying recievers, gun smiths go it all day long. Short of modifying a reciever to accept full auto parts, or desecrating the serial numbers you can do whatever you want.

Unfortunately, the serial number on 10/22 receivers can be on the right (rear) or left (front) side of the RUGER 10/22 logo on the left side of the receiver.
Those with the numbers on the left of the RUGER logo would be where the left side ejection port needs to be, so it's a no-no for receivers numbered there.

I don't think the OP wants to change where the 10/22 ejects brass; I believe he just wants to have a second charging handle on the left.

Your right, on mine, it would destroy about half the of serial number. Guess the OP will just have to start with one of those 80% recievers While the OP doesnt want to change the ejection port side, you would be in essence be cutting one on the left side since the ejection port and charging handle slot are the same in a 10/22. But the slot could be a whole lot smaller, only tall enough for the charging handle.

let us know when you get it goin

I definitely want to see it when it happens. it would take a lot of sideways pressure off the handle, which always seems to tweak/loosen the handle eventually.

^ darn..guess thats what i will have to do.. but im not out of ideas. yet. may have to do a little bolt modification as well.

but ive got solidworks running so i should be able to get it drawn up pretty quick.

I'd have to look at my bolt closely, but as I recall, its a pretty solid chunk of steel. Instead of modifying the stock charging handle/spring assembly, how about this. If there is enough meat on the left side of the bolt, simply drill a blind 3/16 or 1/4 hole in it, then from the top or bottom, drill another smaller hole hole that intersects for a plunger, spring and set screw to hold the spring and plunger in. Then the new, left side charging handle would just snap in with a groove machined in it that the plunger/spring retaining it. I think the charging handle on my 11/87 shotgun is like this...you just pull it out to remove it. You could locate this left side charging handle anywhere on the bolt, so probaly far enough reawared to miss the serial numbers.

that was a thought i had. or maybe just drill and tap it in so when i need to clean it just unscrews. cuz it is basically abig piece of metal. except for the firing pin there isnt much on the left side of the bolt from my memory.

now I have an excuse to buy a dril press with a milling table. and also future ar15 %80

looks like itll work. view is from the side of the reciever looking through it. the oveal shape in the background is the ejection/handle area on other side. so there is a good amount of meat in the bolt just below the model 10/22

The more I think about it, it would probaly be good to have the handle as rearward as possable, that way the new slot would be offset from the factory ejection port. Strength wise, it would be better.

offtopic: nice list of certs there, I used to be certified in Structural Steel manual and semi-automatic and light gauge. Now days its all uncertified tig welding stainless for the marine industry.
