it's a necked down .22mag case with a .17cal bullet...........the answer is no.
(wikipedia).17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire, commonly known as the .17 HMR, is a rimfire rifle cartridge descended from the .22 Magnum. It was developed by necking down the .22 Magnum case to take a .17 caliber (4.5 mm) bullet. Commonly loaded with a 17 grain (1.1 g) bullet, it can deliver muzzle velocities in excess of 2550 ft/s (775 m/s).[2]Last edited by IrishPirate; 08-15-2010, 2:20 PM.sigpic
Most civilization is based on cowardice. It's so easy to civilize by teaching cowardice. You water down the standards which would lead to bravery. You restrain the will. You regulate the appetites. You fence in the horizons. You make a law for every movement. You deny the existence of chaos. You teach even the children to breathe slowly. You tame.

Great for ground squirrels. If you are talking about tree rats that you might want to salvage some of the meat, make sure you are only taking head shots. The .17HRM doesn't leave much on little critters like that. Impressive to look at, though.

I've used a .17 HMR extensively on ground squirrels. It's a great little round and does the deed on them quite nicely. I've found mine to be a very reliable killer out to 150 yards plus. It's a whole different world than a .22 LR, shoots much faster, flatter and it's very accurate. I have mine zeroed at 50 yards which puts it back on POA at about 100 yards, then an inch or so low at 150 yards. It tends to stop a squirrel instantly and shots with V-max ammo at 100 yards or less can be pretty explosive.01001001 00100000 01110111 01101001 01101100 01101100 00100000 01001110 01001111 00100000 01001100 01001111 01001110 01000111 01000101 01010010 00100000 01100011 01101111 01101101 01110000 01101100 01111001Comment
