    rimfire for silhouette shooting?

i want to join my local club's silhouette matches, what kind of rifle should i purchase?

i assume buying a bolt action, but what seems to be a good all around? i keep hearing CZ 452s are good, but i heard they might be eventually discontinued for the new CZ 455, so parts might be hard to come by. i also looked into purchasing a Ruger 77/22, which use the 10/22 magazines? those look pretty cool.

or should i just buy a semi-auto? i was thinking about a plain old 10/22 carbine?

i think a bolt action is the way to go.

i have a Anschutz 1412 Silhouette and have seen some folks shooting their Sako Quad

I used to shoot that game.

You need both rifle and scope. I started w/ a CZ452 Silhouette ($400); then an Anschutz 1712 MS ($1500) after a year. My scope was a Weaver T24 ($400).

You can certainly use a semi-auto if you've already got one, but I wouldn't buy one for this game. The game is harder than it looks due to the offhand shooting, and every little bit helps.

You should go to the matches and ask that question.

Until you know you really like it, I wouldn't go with any specialty items. A good, quality bolt-action and nice scope will get ya going. Get something you can take hunting or plinking with if silhouette isn't your cup-o-tea.

What club is this that has the matches? I've been wanting to pick up silhouette shooting.

Start with ANY .22lr you have. You will figure out what is best for you very soon. I started by shooting an old Winchester '06 until I found a gun that a poor college student could afford. I then spent $75 on a Mossberg 42A and about $250 putting glass on it. 25 years later, it still shoots better than me. Oh BTW, I ran my first 7 turks with it during my first match! As soon as I realized what I was doing, I threw the last three shots.

silhouette matches have different classes by the weight of the rifle including the scope. The 452 American will most like in the hunter class and the 452 Varmint will make it in the Silhouette class because of the weight. Sunnyvale Rod and Gun have the Silhouette matches on the second saturaday of every month. Come and take a look and you can talk to some of the folk. Here is the website explain the rules.

Welcome to silhouette! It's a blast.

Anschutz MS or MS R, either the 54 action or the 64 action for standard rifle, and the 1712 for hunter rifle. All have out of the box, match winning capability, and good ergonomics. A little pricey, but you wont be sorry. There are others as well, but you cant go wrong with these.

come out to USI when they are shooting the rimfire silhoute.....after SAFETY, I think fun is stressed, with friendly competition in there too.
Bring/shoot what you have and slowly figure what you need.
I wanted to see what cowboy lever action shooting was, but didnt have a lever action or pump .22, so they let me shoot my colt m4! Not much of a cowboy rifle, but a great group of guys to let me join in... now I'm lookong for a little lever action .22.

                            silhouette

Ive been shooting this game for about 3 years now. to make a long story story after my first match I had found and ordered an anschutz 1712 before the week was over. Its a great event with hella nice people everywhere you go.

do some reading. alot of reading. visit steelchickens.com
and get familiar with the NRA rules and differences in rifle categories.
                            * tip #1 . the 'hunter' class rifle can also be used for the 'standard'
so eliminating the need to be proficient with 2 rifles& and u dont need to lug two rifles to matches.

                            a few things to consider
                            Your level/comfort with shooting standing,
history with other recreational activities i.e do you tend to abandon them when you get bored etc.
                            and of course funding.

                            equipment is a charged subject.
its not an equipment race. best guns dont mean best scores.
starter guns like the CZ or Anschutz 16-- series are good platforms at a reasonable price.
*tip #2 . Dont be cheap with optics! rifle is one thing, Optics are worth every penny.
Shooting can be very unrewarding if your optics are unreliable/inconsistent.
Companies like Leupold and Weaver have lifetime warranties! hassle free. just pay one way shipping. even if you broke your own scope!
they retain their value very well.

hope this helps. goodluck and make em slam.

I would think for someone on a very tight budget a Savage Mk II bolt-action with an accu-trigger would be very hard to beat. I know they will out-shoot a 10/22 (for less money) and I suspect they would easily out-shoot a 77/22 as well.
