M&P 15-22 vs Ruger 10/22 with a tactical conversion?

Im looking for a .22 "evil black rifle" to train with. I can't decide to go with S&W's M&P 15-22 which is already in AR form, or put a Ruger 10/22 into the ATI or Tapco stock. I've read about FTE problems with the M&P. For cost the M&P will be cheaper than the converted Ruger but may be less reliable. Any opinions are welcome.

as mentioned above, most M&P's will run just fine provided you avoid subsonic and remmington ammo.
A few owners, myself included, actually have had pretty good luck even with Remmy ammo, but I try to avoid it.

My 15-22 has performed perfectly without any issues. I am closing in on 2 cases of ammo. The ammo shot is about even . . . Half CCI Blazer and Half CCI Mini Mags.

Ive put over 10,000 rounds down my 15-22. It's a DTX and I've had no problems with it. I absolutely love this gun.

Yup, the 10/22 is nice, however if OP wants AR controls (same location, all working) on a lil' .22 the M&P is the one.

just got my MP 15-22 2 weeks ago, only shot about 200 rd in it, with federal and remington ammo, without even 1 single problem so far and I actually forget to oil all this time.

However my first rifle was 10/22 which I purchased 2 years ago, had very bad experience with it, FTF and double feed about every 4-5 round for the first 500 round ammo, and it is still having problem for every 20-50 shots even now.

Hmmm...I've got a couple 10/22's and never had any double feed issues. Sounds like an issue with the magazine, not with the rifle. Also if the OP is considering a converted 10/22, why not just get the Ruger SR22??? They are just a 10/22 which is already converted, and I've only heard positive things about them.

I love my M&P 15-22. Almost at the 2K rd mark with no issues. I shoot the Walmart Winchester and Federal bulk packs.

M&P15-22 all the way if you want to train a the best .22lr AR platform in my opinion. I have a S/N DTX also, and it shoots great with Federal bulk and CCI mini mags and CCI blazer, just avoid using the Remington Golden bullet, the M&P does not like those at all. My rifle will not even feed them into the chamber. There is a list of the ammo not to use in the users manual for the M&P. Let us know what you decide!

The cost to mod the 10/22 will probably windup similar in price to the 15-22 when your done. I don't have a 15-22 but I have a 10/22 with a Tapco T6 stock.

I absolutely love it, its badass and feels very high quality and solid. It has a rail on the bottom and one on top, but it has no side rails you can probably add some. The SAW grip kind of bothers me also because the trigger is moved far back just feels awkward. The stock is nice and strong M4 style stock, it also has an attachment where you can have it come out at an angle. It will work with tactical slings on both sides as well. You will definately want to get an extended mag release, the stock one would probably be horrible in tactical situations. I would suggest a bigger charging handle as well since most likely you'll be wearing some kind of gloves.





The 15-22 from what I hear is really good. If you really want something that has controls similar to an AR I'd say get this one. However I was able to get my hands on one at a gunshop and sad to say it feels like a toy. My airsoft guns feel like they have more meat than this. Its VERY light. Much lighter than a real M4. I'd imagine reloading will be easier with the 15-22 than the 10/22.
