Small math question for you.http://www.spikestactical.com/z/inde...roducts_id=176
How does this work with a 5.56 barrel? Seems like it wouldn't work to good.
5.56 = .223, right?
Therefore...
.223 is _____ to .22??
Won't be a real huge issue. Find some fat 40-grain .22lr's.Marlin Specialist

I was told when I asked (and I may be wrong) that the .22 round is actually .224 which is a thousanth of an inch larger but in most modern barrels, especially with chrome lining, the soft lead of the .22 won't hurt it. It should be perfectly fine ti shoot.
The real problem comes not with diameter but twist rate. The AR barrel at 1 in 7-9 spins the .22 round at twice the rate of a dedicated .22 barrel which has a twist rate of 1 in 16. I've been told accuracy suffers. I'm picking up a conversion kit next week and I'll let you know how it works."Everybody knows that the world is full of stupid people.

They work just fine. As noted, barrel rifling twist rate affects accuracy. 1/7 barrels won't generally be as accurate as 1/9. My 16" 1/9 barrel exhibits about 4 MOA (4" groups at 100 yards), good enough for me.I'm retired. That's right, retired. My concern with these conversion kits is the life span of the barrel. Shooting .223 is pretty expensive so a typical range visit for me would be about 200 rounds max. With the conversion I could easily multiply that number by 10 so how many rounds or range trips will a .223 barrel last shooting .22lr through it?
I went with a dedicated upper instead to minimize the abuse to a .223 upper. It also helps me justify building more lowers.sigpic

A 223 barrel is designed for use with hard, jacketed FMJ rounds going 3300 fps.
A typical 22LR round is soft lead (even if plated) at 1200 fps.
The wear to your 223 barrel from shooting 22LR = negligible.
I have put several tens of thousands of 22LR through my 223 barrel using a Ciener conversion kit with no ill effects. Just clean the barrel occasionally with CLP, and clean the gas tube occasionally by shooting a few rounds of 223.Comment

That's good enough for me too. Pretty amazing to see the numbers. It really is negligible apparently.Comment

Correct. Your rifle, with a conversion kit installed, is now a rimfire and not subject to the AW section(s) of the Penal Code. Remember to remove all evil features, install/engage a magazine lock, or remove the upper from the lower (a lower without an upper installed has no caliber and cannot, by itself, be an AW unless it is a listed receiver) before reinstalling your 5.56mm bolt carrier group. Don't have a 5.56mm bolt carrier group in place and the upper receiver installed unless you have satisfied one of the first two conditions listed above.Last edited by Grumpyoldretiredcop; 08-08-2010, 12:49 AM.I'm retired.
