Advice: Exp with red dot or holo for 10/22

I don't do a lot of bench shooting and was wondering about your experiences with a red dot or holo for varmint hunting on a 10/22. I do a lot of back country camping and usually any hunting is by opportunity so quick target acquisition is important (i'm just not that great with eye relief). Basically this means all my shooting will easily be under 100 yards. Thanks for any input!

How much you want to spend? It makes a big difference in the size of the dot. A cheap unit will cover between 3 and 5 MOA. With eye sight issues it maybe more like 5 to 7 MOA. That is 5 to 6 inches at 100 yards so hitting small things that are 2 to 3 MOA size is hard. Spend double what the rifle cost and it will be better but not by much.
A scope with low magnification and a bright lighted reticle might be more useful.

I would honestly go with a Primary Arms 1-4x scope for $99 bucks or so off of www.primaryarms.com. They also have some great cheap red dot sights if thats what you are really fixed on going for. The primary arms multi reticle red dot sight that is kind of like an aimpoint comp C3 clone for 1/3 of the price isn't bad and has at least a small reticle size as opposed to 4 and 5 MOA dots found on a lot of the other brands. For varmint, I like really fine dots or crosshairs personally but that is just a preference. Good luck with whatever you pick and post up a couple of pictures if you get a chance!
