Best upgrades for my 10/22?

I been looking into upgrading my Old 10/22 with a new firing pin, extractor and bolt handle and springs. My question is what are the best parts to buy aftermarket what should I leave factory. The reviews on various manufacturers on the internet is really wish washy.

I replaced my trigger and extractor with a Volquartsen many years ago and haven't had any issues. The new timney trigger looks interesting but I haven't had a chance to try one out yet.

I've always found that sights are important for accuracy. If you can't see anything, then you can't hit anything no matter how good the rifle is. Once you can see, then ammo, then trigger, then stock/ergos, then barrel/bedding, then color. It's not 10/22 specific.

1) Read rimfirecentral.com. That website is a treasure trove for the 10/22
2) Don't buy parts willy-nilly or you will just end up buying parts to fix problems brought about by other parts. Ask me how I know (example: a lighter firing pin means less mass hitting the primer which can cause light strikes w/ certain ammo. The fix would be to go back to the stock FP or install a heaver hammer spring). People go nuts buying parts because compared to other guns, the parts are relatively cheap. Does the end result net them a better (more accurate) gun? not necessarily.
3) There's a ton of stuff you can do to accurize your 10/22 w/o spending a dime. Examples: polishing the trigger group, reversing the trigger plunger spring, removing the barrel band, using a spark plug wrapped in sandpaper to widen the barrel channel and free float the barrel, etc. As far as convenience mods go, the auto-bolt release is a 5 min dremel fix which will save you $10.

Item recommendations:
1) Don't replace the FP unless you need to (light strikes, etc). Go stock or heavier, not lighter.
2) Don't replace the extractor unless you are getting FTEs. Otherwise, you are wasting $8 bucks.
3) A better trigger can be had by polishing the internals. You also don't necessaarily need the hammer + sear, just a hammer will get you a lighter pull.
4) Don't replace the barrel until you are noticing you're shooting at the limit of what the barrel can do. Otherwise, this is just a cosmetic fix.
5) Don't replace the springs unless you need to (experiencing problems like FTEs).
6) The bold handle is a cosmetic fix unless you are having problems because the bolt handle assembly is bent.

Shooting weekly to bi-weekly, I probably spent ~6 months tweaking my 10/22. I'd probably say that 30-40% of the time, I was trying to address reliability issues brought about by my aftermarket parts. It's a balance that you will have to play with but the net result can be rewarding.

Auto bolt release (original always was a pain)
Extended mag release (if an older 10/22, new ones come with them)
I like the Power Custom hammer, shim and spring kits (easy drop in)
Also I like their charging handle / guide rod (new1022 guide rods are so coarse on the surface they almost seem threaded, should be a smooth surface)
Extractor (if needed, the new 1022s seem to need it...got stovepipe jams?)

My 10/22 has a green mountain barrel on it that I put on several years ago (after the original barrel stated keyholeing targets). Also pretty big Simmons scope that I can read the small print on a beer can at 50 yards. Lately when it gets dirty after 50 rounds I run into FTE problems

gunn is spot on. Ruger's parts just need TLC. Unless your goal is a sub 2lb trigger pull, stock parts will do. VQ and Power Custom make a good extractors if you don't feel llike reshaping and heat treating your original. I left RFC years ago when someone spammed Antlurz, you couldn't find a more generous soul.

Best thing you can do is trade it in on a Marlin 795 or a Calico M-100 carbine

Especially the Calico...100 rounds per mag of .22LR hot lead luv
