Marlin 60 (795 w/mod??) Thumbhole Stocks!

From what I am reading elsewhere, these limited runs sell out in a matter of days. It looks like they are taking pre-orders right now.

I am hoping that a little modification will allow installation of a 795. Thoughts?

You will need to cut a hole for the magazine. The screw holes should line up because the receivers are the same as far as I can tell.

How much support does the barrel need? I thought free floated barrels help with precision on group size. Will the 60 tube relief need to be filled, or leave as is to reduce weight?

I wondered about that myself. I am just going to go slow, limit power tools (things can go south very quickly!), and ask questions when I get stumped.

Having not done this myself I suggest you see if you can put the assembled the rifle parts into the stock without the magazine. If you can tighten the screws down, even lightly, it will make my tip easier. Paint the bottom of the magazine well with a marking agent. Put the rifle into the stock carefully and tighten down the screws. Unscrew the rifle parts and take them out of the stock. You should now have an outline that you can use to begin your cutting. I also suggest you remove as little wood as is necessary, especially near the front screw hole. For tools I suggest a drill and coping saw rather than the chisels and Dremels mentioned in the website I posted.

For barrel support that website shows using part of the wood removed for the hole at the front of the stock. This is a good reason to get a nice solid piece of wood out of the hole.

I ordered anyway... It DOES say they'll be available after the 13th. If not, I figure it could go one of three ways:
They won't charge my card
They DO charge my card and refund it if there aren't any more stocks
They DO charge my card, and just wait until there are more stocks.

Any way it goes, I'm no worse for wear.

For Boyd's ordering: if you can order them (even though they say they're out of stock), then the stocks will be shipped to you when they are ready.

It's when they're not available for sale (and don't exist at all on the site) that means they're sold out.

I did a "How To" and posted it with pics HERE. You can do the same thing with a vice
and a router, just go slow. I did a friends Papoose in his vice with his router and it
turned out just about as nice.

And yes the actions are the same. One of the Boyds stock required a little internal
sanding to get the 795 to clear but it was VERY little.




I've done several now so its getting easer every time.

Hrm...depends on the Average Joe...

Here's what I prefer...if you are gonna do it, I suggest a Drill Press to reduce potential errors.
You've ALWAYS got a neighbor with one...check the neighborhood, make a new friend
Use the original stock as a guide. Use a pencil to mark where you need to cut/drill at.
Measure twice, drill once...drill the front trigger guard hole first.


Take a handheld coping saw and SLOWLY remove the magwell material...main reason for that, it'll save you a nice chunk to place in the tip of the stock

You don't have to cut the front of the stock back...unless you are looking to do something in your own style.
