Sig Sauer 522 SWAT - Availble in CA?

I just did a search and came up with nothing. I've seen a few posts of guys either swapping the regular 522 hand guards for SWAT hand guards. I like the look of the 522 SWAT but it doesn't make any sense to buy the hand guard aftermarket since it's about a $250-$300 upgrade and the retail on the SWAT version of the 522 is only $114 difference in MSRP.

The Sig website says the SWAT model is not MA or CA compliant. There are no OAL specifications on the SWAT model on their website, however the stock looks identical and the barrel length on both models is 16.6". I contacted a local dealer to ask if they could order the SWAT model and was told I needed to be LEO in order to purchase it because of the large capacity magazine. I realize this is FUD, but I'm not sure why Sig shows the 522 SWAT version as non-CA compliant. Is it only because they are not offering the 522 SWAT version with a 10 round mag?

Any ideas? Anyone had a local (SoCal) dealer order them a 522 SWAT?

Seconded, I was handling one this afternoon at my local range. The SWAT 522 is going to be next purchase for me. I'm in SF, so I can't be much more help than that but yeah they're available. FWIW I couldn't fold the stock on the SWAT model I handled but I don't know if was because it was pinned or I just couldn't figure it out.

If you are in the SF Bay Area, I've seen them at one place for sure and could have bought one. I opted for the classic though--it was on sale and I took the difference and bought Samson Fold-down BUIS--be aware the 522 doesn't come with iron sights and AR front sight won't fit the front (it will be too high).

Why wouldn't a rail mounted front/rear iron sight work? Is there something different about the hand guard rail versus the top rail on the upper?

The Sig 522 is the spittin' image of the Sig 556 which has an extended gas-block in the front which holds the front sigh mount--this raises the sight mount point aspect relative to the rear sight on the rail and requires a shorter front sight.

Notice Samson makes 4, count 'em, 4 front sights--they distinguish the 556 as the fourth. The reason is height--you buy a regular height sight and you won't get the sight pin down enough to zero. Look at the gas block sight--still higher in profile to the 556 sight. You have a 522, buy Sig 556 compatible front sights or weep. All rear sight are fine--no height problems as they fit on the rail. It's Sig quirkiness.
