    Marlin 795 Range Report

Desert, southwest of Barstow, 7:02 am. As the slow rising sun encroaches upon the looming ...........

    Wait, just kidding.

So this morning I got to give the Marlin a run. First 5 mags of so went without a hiccup. This rifle is very accurate. After a few mag's I had occasional instances where it would fire the first round, eject fine and cock but when I pulled the trigger, nothing. It had not chambered a round. Rack the slide and good to go. Out of around 300 rounds (30 mags) it happened maybe 5-6 times. Like I said, not FTE, it never failed to eject. It just didn't load a round. I had one FTF with a good strike. Just a dud. I was using some Winchester XPert & Federal bulk copper plated value pack. Both say they are high velocity and both are hollow point.

I am very happy with the performance. Maybe just needs a break in. The fact that it never jammed or FTE was good for a first run. I guess the slide just didn't make it back far enough to grab the round. The spring in the mag is tight when full for sure. I need to get multiple mags and some sort of loader. It was a PITA loading. Luckily I also had the older Marlin 60 with 17-18 in the tube. The 60 had one FTE out of around 300 rounds, otherwise ran perfectly.

Free standing it shoots just as well as the older Marlin. 50 yards+ 3-4 in groups shooting in a slight wind. At 50 ft 2 in groups without even trying.

As far as not loading the second round, not sure, maybe the mag or maybe different ammo, or maybe the charge spring needs to loosen up. I plan on leaving the slide back for a while (after I clean it) and maybe give it another run next weekend.

    Pics coming!

I'm not an expert, but have found most 22LR ammo will do a failure to fire (i.e. primer hit by gun, and round did not fire) about 1%. Primarily I use Federal, but also used some Remington.

This is with a Ruger Single Six - which makes a REALLY big indent on the primer.

Same result with my Glenfield 60, but it does better w/ Federal than Remington (Rem = unjacketed lead bullets).

Failure to load is usually lack of lubrication... in semi-autos....

It was cleaned and lubed well prior to taking it out.

If it cycles the first round and then completely fails to load the second, I would look at the magazine first. Make sure there's no grit/dirt/gunk in the magazine, and that the follower rides up and down smoothly. I like to spray some rem oil in the magazine and run the follower up and down just to make sure the magazines are clean.

This is most likely the case if it happens with one particular (or two) magazine and not with the rest. If you only have one mag, try another one and see if the issue resolves itself.

I will be ordering more mags and some kind of mag loader.

Any suggestions on a mag loader for these?

I don't have any experience with that particular gun, so I'm not aware of any loaders. But, I do have it's cousin gun, the Model 60 and I've never really had any problems with cycling even cheap bulk ammo, so I would point to the magazine as the culprit.

My friend just got a Marlin 795 and seems to have had similar issues. I think she will chime in here in just a bit.

First of all, congrats on the new rifle! It sounds like you are on the right track. I would get a few more mags just because and then fire another few hundred rounds to finish breaking it in.

If it still gives you trouble you can always call Marlin. Mine has had a few FTEs with Thunderbolts, but then again, it does mention not to use them specifically in the manual.

                Good luck!

I bought a few extra mags and on a recent range trip I brought a Sharpie and labeled them all (1-7). Two of them seem to have FTE issues that the rest never have. I will see if this repeats on another trip.

I second the idea of getting some extra mags so you can at least narrow down if it is likely a mag issue or the gun.

                    FIRST POST!

Ok so, here's my story: I bought a new Marlin 795, cleaned & oiled it, then took it to the range the next day. At the range, I noticed that 2 out of 3 of my mags had FTF issues.

It seems like the original mag works fine. Upon closer inspection of the extra 2 mags I purchased (Marlin factory originals), it seems like the mags were slightly longer than the mag that came with the 795, and there might be something going on with the feed lips (not sure what - I'm only a novice).

Also, I had the same FTF issue where the second round wouldn't chamber. I also used .22 Federal high velocity.

Overall though, it's quite a nice rifle. Very nice groupings!

Ok second trip out. Just kept it oiled and seems to have only FTF on 1 in every 100 rounds, otherwise runs good as long as you keep it oiled.

Here's a few pics. These are free standing with the crappy factory sights at about 100 feet. Many shots were fired in rapid succession. If I took my time I could hit a beer can with ease. Very accurate out of the box.

                          and 75 feet

Can't wait to get the tech sights but I need them for the 795 & the 60 so that's around $150 with shipping.
