Optics for a M&P 15-22??

Who runs what and how do you like it???? Looking for an optic probably along the lines of a replica ACOG, LMK what you have that works.

I have been running a weaver 1x3 on my center fire and rimfire rifles.works good. The CAA mount was $26 bucks and I used it on the S&W M&P 15. I am very happy with the scope as it is very clear and not too expensive. You can find it for a little over $129 if you shop around.

I use a 4x replica ACOG, it is perfect for plinking. However I also installed a 1/2" picatinny riser to bring the scope a little higher.

My 15/22 is in jail right now and I have been looking around for optics as well. Should I first pratice with the stock iron sights before moving into the optics realm?

This will be my first rifle and I want to take things slow. How is a red dot different than a scope?

Most red dots are not magnified. If they are they are fix in magnification. Batteries dont tend to last long unless you buy a red dot that is higher end.
Most scopes dont require batteries and they have magnification for the most part. you want to match the scope size and magnification to what you are shooting and what you intend to shoot. Cheap scopes suck as the image is usually dark and the image gets blurry at the edge.

I would recomend getting accustomed to using the stock irons before going with any kind of optics. Its better to get a true feel for what the rifle itself is doing before you add another variable. I just picked up my 15-22 a few days ago, and I do have an extra red dot I could use with it, but not until I feel VERY comfortable with the irons.

thanks for the replies guys. ya, i think i'm going to master the stock iron sights first.

but eventually i'll be looking for a nice scope. what good scopes are out there for $150 or less that will fit on the stock rail mount?

^^^ I agree with MrPlink. Being comfy with irons is important.

Even after trying a cheapo holo red dot and a 3-9x on our 15-22, we still will put the irons on for some days. Depends on maybe what range one is shooting at, or in our case what we feel like doing We didn't get any aftermarket folding irons, but after several occasions removing the stock sights they are ON target again when we put 'em back on.

fwiw, the cheapo sights we have used are from amazon Both of these mount right up, but the rings incl with the scope are a little low. Otherwise, the cheapo's have worked fine so far, and each gives the rifle a different look. Fun to play with.

Smoky I agree with Mr. Plink and WSMC use the irons and get used to them. I had been shooting for quite sometime before I ever used a scope. Scopes have their purpose and Reddots are good for close, quick target aquisition and magnified optics are good for prescision shooting but require practice to master. I would like the best of both worlds in the optic that I put on my 15-22 hence the ACOG type sight I believe I'll end up putting on the 15-22.
Now just to figure which one is going to work???

I have a Sig 522, but same challenge with a twist--the 522 doesn't come with irons so I bought some Samson fold-downs BUIS--cost a bit but I like them. Working with them before I even get an optic.

I am pre-disposed to get a red dot and swing out 3x magnifier because I want something out to at most 120 meters or a bit over. I like the unlimited eye relief in RDs. I'll save the ACOG for my planned .308 and maybe my current M4 if with a bird cage mount RD as well closer in (still on irons with the M4 and working it out).

I like the 1x3 as you can shoot with both eyes open. As for open sights vs scoped, I go for the scope. To each their own
