+1. Started my son on a Model 60 when he was 10 years old. The rifle has always been reliable and accurate. It was a little heavy for him in the beginning though.

Marlin 60 or Marlin 795 (I think the 795 is currently on sale at Turners). Same rifles except for the magazines.

I got a crickett as when I hand any youth a 10/22 all they do is pull the trigger . I like the mechanics of the crickett , it forces them to shoot straight and make it count.

The Marlins are attractive, they are a good value in rimfire rifles and they are light weight. They will take a youngster a ways towards good marksmanship and saftey.
For me the size of the youngster and the type of rifle they can shoot comfortably go together. For smaller frame 6/9 year old youth a small bolt action single shot is safe and accurate enough to keep them interested. The parent should be right on top of the shooter to assist. The next middle size frame 10/12 can handle a little more barrel weight and stock size. They need to be strong enough to operate/understand all safety features of the rifle. For kids over 12/13 a lever action/pump with a little more barrel weight. All these are manual actions lever, pump or bolt. They can be made safe by the child. I like seeing the shooter place the gun in a safe condition instead of the parent stepping in to place a 10/22s action open because the child can't manipulate the bolt and the lock at the same time. For me it comes down to what rifle the child can, with some supervised practice, completely master the operation. YMMV.

But you will never go wrong with a 10/22

My son is 7 years old and most of the fixed stocks are too long for him and most rifles are too heavy too. I would recommend to get a Ruger 1022 with a 6 position collapsible stock. You can upgrade as he grow too. Other rifles are very good but upgrades will be expensive or limited.

10/22 for a semi, cz for a bolt gun. You can use it as a single shot or get the mag that holds 5 rounds. It is just a great gun, and I believe it has the shortest length of pull of all the youth models. There might have been one other gun with a shorter length of pull by a half inch but it felt like a POS. The cz is a little more expensive, but worth every penny. It is so accurate,I even like shooting it.
