Marlin 925

I'm interested in the Marlin 925 for my first 22 rifle. Can any current owners share their opinions on it?

The best deal I can find on the 925 is for $173 from Buds.. is this a good deal or has it been on sale before on Turners?

It is a good rifle, though I have a 795. It is the Semi version of a 925.

Very good gun and very accurate. They go on sale for $159 at Big5 every few weeks. Sportsman's Warehouse has them at the same price or less regularly as does Bass Pro Shops I believe. The gun itself is very accurate, but the stock trigger pull is pretty strong (6-8 pounds). I did the ball point pen spring replacement on the trigger return spring and it dropped down to maybe 3 pounds or less. It's still stiff enough to be safe, but it is much easier to hold the gun steady while pulling the trigger now that the pull has been reduced.

It would be a good idea to clean the gun off right out of the box because there was crud everywhere in the barrel. Another little annoyance is that the screw holding in the trigger assembly to the receiver came loose twice which made the trigger inoperable. The symptom is increasingly tighter and finally the firing pin starts producing light strikes. I put a lock washer into that and it now holds the assembly in there reliably.

For a base, I found a pair of scope rings for the Marlin 336 on clearance at Wal Mart for $3. They mount directly to the tapped receiver and are tall see through mounts. That lets me keep the iron sights and use the scope. I had to get new base screws because the ones that came with the rings were made for the Marlin 336, but had a spare set of 10/22 screws and it fit the receiver perfectly.

With that setup, I get dime sized patterns at 50 yards using Federal and Winchester bulk ammo and 1" groups at 100 yards on a calm day (dialed in with about a 4" drop).

Thanks for the insight rsrocket1.! I just searched Big5, sportsman's warehouse, and BPS but couldn't find any Marlins. Oh well! I guess Bud's is the best deal right now.

Tmac, I think you're referring to the 795.. I'm looking at the 925

I have a 925M, dead accurate with any 22WMR ammo. Not fancy but sure shoots straight. Trigger is not the best but the micro-groove barrel is one of the best out there.
