If you are the kind of person who goes into a best buy and gets a pre-made computer -- then I recommend the CZ.

If you are the kind of person who goes into a Frys and buys the motherboard, the hard drive, memory, CPU, etc and puts it all together. then I recommend the 10-22.

lol, I'm the guy who buys all my parts online, at different vendors (newegg, zipzoomfly, tiger, yadda, yadda), then asks my buddy to attach the processor to the board, and the cooler to the processor, and the does the rest myself, cuz i worry i'll bend a pin or something.

I purchased a bolt action Remington Nylon 11 in the early 1960's for small game hunting in Arizona. I'm still using it and my grandsons enjoy shooting it,wish I'd purchased a Remington Nylon 22 semi also.

I honestly think you would be better off not doing the second upper in 22. I am partial to the dedicated weapon system where you put the gun together and leave it together so you always know your weapon is in working order. Some people might disagree... but I have done a function check on a gun... took it to the range... fired it... only to have it fail eventually because I put it together wrong on accident. (not my proudest moment)

The 795 is a great choice. If you want scope it that is awesome too. Midway/Cabelas always have a good deal on some scope. Generally speaking you should spend as much money on glass as you do on your gun. I am not an expert in this area some somebody else should chime in. Personally I am still mastering my iron sites and good form before I go dropping good money on scopes... not to mention iron is fun!

Get the cheapest (trainer model sells for around $350) with the iron sights. This way you'll learn the basic rifle shooting skills, then you can scope it and start blasting ground squirrels with head shots at 75 yards. Trigger mods are DIY and inexpensive, rifle is top European quality and will last you a lifetime.
+1 My Trainer is a great rifle. Triggers are not great out of the box, but with a little work mine is now perfect. My dad has a Timney trigger in his 452 American we shoot silhouette with, and that's a great upgrade. If you go with the American you probably want to free-float the bbl; Trainer and Lux models have a forward screw. The bolt will break in after a few hundred rounds to be silky smooth.

How about a S&W 15-22. Its is customizable as an AR style rifle goes, hand grip, butt stock, pistol grip, iron sights, optics, red dots, slings and other such parts. Its a good transition rifle going from AR in 22 caliber to 223. Its accurate enough, I can shoot empty shotgun hulls at 30 yards. Its fun to shoot

So, I decided I'd go into Turner's after work this evening, and I did, and they didn't have the 795 that was on sale. They had a used one, on consignment, and I held that one, looked it over, and thought it was really plastic-y. So I looked at the 10/22 that he had, and it seemed like a lot more rugged of a gun. So, i started asking some questions, hoping that I could get some advice out of the guys behind the gun counter (there wasn't a line, so I figured they wouldn't mind). Did I get the help I sought? Eff No. The guy that was helping me, did his best to put me down for wanting a "kid's gun", and mentioned things like "most men usually start with a real rifle", and such nonsense. I was already not a big fan of Turners, but I tell u, this guy really squashed it even further for me. I know the .22 is not a substantial caliber, but with enough people buying/owning/shooting them, I really didn't expect to be treated like that. I mean c'mon, it's not like I went in asking to buy a daisy BB Gun so that I could look cool at the range... jeez... that store will not be seeing me again for a long time. It really was a sour experience.

So, back to square 1... looking on CalGuns, and GB, maybe I'll find the right looking piece, at the right price, at the right time....

until then, I appreciate everyone's feedback, and it doesn't have to stop just yet. I'm still considering getting into rimfire, and I'm still open to suggestions and advice.

Play. Play alone, play with your spouse, your kids, your friends. Just play.

You would love the 10-22. Lots of options to get parts online. You can customize everything to fit you. The best part is you get the rifle and its a solid foundation. From there you can overtime upgrade a few things at a time.

As you evolve with your experience with the rifle, so does your rifle.

                      Very Solid Advice

It will have the most options at the best price. Most have iron sights and are drilled and tapped for scope mounts. You can improve its accuracy as you get more experience and money. Good for folks who like to tinker and plan to progress in their shooting.

Most 795s will shoot good enough for informal target shooting right out of the box. There are few aftermarket options available. The way it shoots out of the box is what you get. You may out shoot it quickly. Marlin makes good rifles in bolt action and semi auto. They are good values and generally shoot well in their price range. I am a big Marlin fan but I would go with something else.

                      COMPLETELY AGREE
If you want to learn better shooting with an eye to centerfire target rifle in the future. I would suggest a bolt action rifle. Almost all accurate long range rifles are bolt action.
EXCELLENT ADVICE/ Considering OPs original post

CZs 452/455 have a reputation for quality. Put your money in optics you can move too a centerfire rifle and it will be a lifetime investment. The triggers are decent from the factory and a few mods are available. The aftermarket stock choices are limited and expensive this may change soon. They have a good selection of styles and looks with more being introduced all the time. With better ammo these will shoot. Mine likes most any ammo. They have a simple scope mounting and you can get it with irons to start. Just remember factory stocks on iron sighted rifles often don't work well for scopes. CZ sells the stocks as parts.

Savage MKlls have a wide range of models to fit your desires for looks and accuracy, irons now and scope later is easy. The options in aftermarket parts are good. Spend money on optics that you can use for centerfire later (24X or more) and it will be a good value. These are the 10/22 of the bolt action rifles. Lots of stocks available at around 100 bucks and good tech support on the web. The Accutrigger is good out of the box. Mine likes expensive ammo. Wears a Mueller 8x32.
This is the way I would go.
I would take a hard look at the CZ .22 rimfires. They are even going to be selling their semi-auto again if that is your desire. But personally, I would stick with a high quality .22 LR bolt rifle, especially if you are looking to transition to a .30 or greater centerfire precision rifle.

Some of the best shooters started with a lowly .22 rimfire and most still train/ practice with one today. Dry fire is great, but nothing beats actually shooting a real rifle to acquire skill and experience. Personally, I own a CZ 452 and feel for the money it is tough to buy a better rifle but the truth of the matter is a Marlin, Savage, Remington, Winchester could meet your needs as well.

Although, I will say that I have yet to see another manufacturer with such high quality iron sights as the CZs (for a rifle under $500) and built with real metal parts, and fine wood with good fit/ finish.

                      Good Luck in your search,

                      SkiDevil

Sorry to hear about that. Curious as to which Turner's it was. Reason I ask is from alot of threads that I read there are some Turner's that are bad and some that are really good. I usually go to the Turner's in Pasadena or West Covina and have always had good service from both stores.

If you wanna play with a 10/22 I will be at Burro Canyon on Saturday and your more than welcome to try mine out. Just a factory 10/22 with a scope on there.

PM me if you want more details.

Turners has the 795's on sale every 3 months. I grew up with a Marlin 60, got the itch recently and bought this Glenfield (rebranded Marlin) that is 15-20+ years old, barely used.

It is NOT an Anshutz, but a LOT of fun to shoot. Tube holds 17 rounds, and barrel is 3" longer than either the 795 or 10/22.

All above posters are correct - the 10/22 is like an early Camaro - tons of aftermarket parts, shoots great. The 795 is inexpensive and shoots GREAT.

For me, these low end, but still high quality and accurate 22s are just a blast.
And ya gotta love that little squirrel...

You just about can't buy a bad 22lr rifle. At least I can't think of one.
I brought this one up to let you know that used 22 rifles just don't get much wear, and unless abused, are a great deal... and fun...

Sorry to here about your Turners experience. Had the same thing happen many times before. Turners, Bass Pro Shops, Bain & Davis, etc, etc, etc. But in all of those places I have had great experiences also. Sometimes from the same people on a different day. Some gun shop guys are just full of attitude and others know what customer service and respect is, ALL THE TIME, regardless of the bad day there having or whatever.

I bought the Marlin 795 today at Turners and the guy was nice as pie. Friendly and not condescending, not talking down to me. Tomorrow maybe he will be a d**k to someone else to make up for it.

BTW they are out of them. I bought the one they had out. There were none left in the warehouse.
