Ballistic Data for .22 WMR Vs. .17 HMR

Anyone have data for these two rimfire rounds? I have a Marlin .22 WMR bolt action and would like to compare that with .17 HMR. Is .22 WMR inferior than .17 HMR for small game hunting?

Hi lex . . .

I reluctantly got into the 17hmr, but the velocity difference between 17hmr and 22mag is quite signifcant . . . especially in distances of around 200 yards.

I believe they found that at velocities above the current 22mag, a lead projectile becomes unstable (2000fps+)

Also what enjoyed in the 17hmr is coming from a rifle scoped/zeroed at 100yard you'd experience a bullet drop of about 8.5" for hitting targets at 200yards. . . certainly quite a bit "flatter" than the 22 caliber family.

Though I must say I love the little rimfires 22 out to 100yds and 17 out to 200yds

sweet rifles.....but way expensive,easier to by a true snipe rifle for the price

Yeah, if only one caliber is what you want--with this one you can have all three but for a price--a steep price--but less than three rifles, each different in trigger, stock, sights, etc. I watch on gunbroker--maybe I'll get a deal one day

i thought that all of the 17 hmr ammo makers came to the conclusion that the cartridge was dangerous in semi auto guns? i could be wrong but for some reason i think so

Useful, but OLD information, written originally in 2005...much of it before the faster .22WMR rounds came out
with 30 & 33-grain bullets @ 2300FPS came into play.

Check out the new ballistics on the 30-grains...it's a much faster round than the older rounds listed on the page

Even more sad was the fact that he only had a Mossberg .22WMR...for precision .22WMR, you need a Marlin.
Preferrably a at least a 25MN/925M, or even better..a Marlin 982VS.

Yep, the Remington 597 was recalled due to multiple incidents of .17HMR KABOOM.

It's hard to make a good semi-auto in .22WMR or .17hmr, MANY have tried, only a few ever came close to getting it right.

Marlin 922
Grendel R-31 (AWB killed it, I have one, it's GREAT)
H&R 700
Accel Excellerator Carbine (only one currently made)

Those all worked, but you needed to keep the bolt polished to a high shine & well greased.
Also had to keep them as clean as an M-16 action...so cleaning after every range visit/hunting trip was KEY.

The failures...
Ruger 10/22M (discontinued 5 times due to unresolvable problems)
Remington 597 (the .22lr works, the .17HMR & .22WMR don't)
and everything else...
