    Coyote Hunting with Rimfire

I recently purchased an Colt M4 "ops" series, .22LR Mag. just for plinkin around etc... I zeroed it totday at 30yds, and it kept a dime size grouping with .22lr mag. hollow points... which made me think:

I have a friend with a ranch and a coyote problem... Will .22lr mag. hollow points be adequate? I mean, I suppose if you shoot anything in the right spot with anything, it'll work... But could this possibly be a 1 shot 1 kill clean kill rifle? I don't mind killing varmints but try to reduce the suffering as much as possible... and I don't have the cash for a .223 yet... Thanks alot in advance!

.22lr mag? I'm pretty sure it's just a .22lr and not .22wmr. One shot kills can be very tough on yotes...but can be done. Don't use stingers or other lightweight hyper velocity rounds. CCI velocitors or SGB flat points would make quick work of a coyote with a headshot or a lucky shot to the heart under 50 yards, but be ready for a few follow up shots just in case. Most likely it won't be a clean kill. I would personally use a caliber with more energy like a .223, 30-06, 12 gauge...you get the idea. If you don't want the pelt, might as well use too much gun imho.

22lr on a coyote, unless you are a very, very, very good shot will probably not be a humane kill. More likely a wounded animal that will run off and maybe die. 22lr just doesn't have the energy on an animal that large unless you hit it in the head or heart. 22wmr @ 50yds or less has a better chance but .223 or larger is the way to go for a quicker and more humane kill.

There are plenty of inexpensive .223 rifles out there, save up and get one.

lol, people use .177 pelletguns for Bore hunting, why would a 22LR not do the job? Yes, granted its not as powerful as other guns, but like most guns...you have to do your end of the work to get a good kill.

My cousin has a ranch in Montana. He frequently takes out coyotes with the .22 LR. He uses the Hyper Velocity ammo. I haven't tried it, but I would imagine it would work. Just make sure of your shot.

PCH should/will chime in here sometime soon. He hunts coyotes with his .22lr and can give some pointers.

If you use the 60grn ammo, that is heavier than most 556/223 bullets, and will drop a yote in his tracks. You just have to make sure your gun will stabilize those heavier bullets.

over the years Ive shot alot of coyotes with a 22lr. I used to be out on a tractor, and they would follow up close to get any mice or birds that the tractor turned up. I could regularly get shots at between 20 and 50 yds. thos that ran off usaly did not get far. DR
