Volquartsen Exact Edge Extractor for Ruger 22/45 Mark3

I just purchased the Ruger 22/45 at Turners but have not picked up the gun yet. I shot this gun at the range and had some issues with jamming and "stove piping."
I have read that this is very common and can be fixed with the installation of the Volquartsen Extractor.
I tried to find a youtube video on how to install this but cannot find one. Is there a video for this?

Also, is it always necessary to have these VQ upgrades to make it function properly? Are there any Ruger owners out there who uses the stock gun without any upgrades with no problems with jamming?

    Thanks

Mine is completely stock, I run fed 550's through it, cci minis/blazer, never a problem, even fiocchi ammo. It may just need to break in, don't jump to needing to modify it just yet.

The extractor is easy to replace. You will get instructions with the new part. The hard part for some folks is the reassembly of the mainspring housing to the frame. Lots of info on this on the net but it is basically getting one end of a swinging link inside the frame into a cup on the mainspring housing, once done it is easy.
Stove piping involves a empty case left in the action. Doesn't this say the case came out of the chamber because it is in the action. The job of the extractor is to remove an unfired case, fired cases should come out under much pressure due to firing. Its called blow back and it is very powerful much more than a little extractor. These guns will run fine with no extractor. Clean the bolt, receiver and chamber leaving the chamber unlubed dry and try again. Stove piping can be due to sluggish bolt movement, not enough energy to flip the case out. "Jamming" the same.

I know plenty of people who run stock extractors in their Ruger rimfire guns with no issues. But considering the Volquartsen Exact Edge Extractor is cheap and easy to install, and doesn't hurt/degrade performance, I went ahead and put one on my 10/22. I don't recall putting one on my MK II, though. I would hazard the guess that I did since I did crack it open to install the On Target trigger shield.

I've replaced that part on my MKIII. Never used a video.

That's probably the best step by step instructions you'll find online. It's pretty simple once you get it broken down, but it almost requires the use of 3 hands. I managed to do it by myself with a laptop on the work bench next to me.

Some thin pins/dental picks will likely come in handy so if you don't already have those - acquire them sir.

I had serious jamming with the Remington Golden Bullet until i replaced the Volquartsen Extractor. It runs fine with everything i put through it now.

Before you go throw money at the problem, even if it's not too much money, check out this site:

I followed this guys instructions and it solved my stovepiping issue.
I just carried a set of jewelers files to the range. Filed, shot a mag, and repeated until I ended up 100% reliable.
My gun will shoot the 550rd federal packs w/o any fuss.
                  Regards,

PS. I still won't touch golden bullets.

will this mod void the Ruger warranty?

IIRC, Ruger does not provide a warranty on any firearm.

I've heard that method can work if it's a magazine issue. But when you have six magazines to sit there and file, or you can just change out one extractor....I'm lazy and go for the option with the least amount of work involved.

Thank you everyone for your helpful replies.
I am interested to know out of all the ruger 22/45 owners, how many only shoot stock extractors without jamming problems. It seems to me that the majority get the VQ extractor due to jamming. Why does Ruger not fix this problem?

Why does Ruger not fix this problem?
What problem. Ruger can demonstrate a reliable firing function without any extractor installed. You just won't be able to remove an unfired round.
Most extractor problems are cured when the owner cleans the gun while it is disassembled for the install of the aftermarket parts. Millions of 22/45, 10/22, MK series guns have been reliable with the factory extractors.
I have changed mine to aftermarket based on this basic test of extractor function. Remove the bolt. With the bolt face pointing up place a round under the extractor against the bolt face as if in the firing postion. Now carefully turn the bolt upside down. If the round stays in place I keep the extractor if it falls away I replace with aftermarket. All I want my extractor to do is it's job, extracting unfired rounds. Simple.
As to the mag causing stovepiping. I am sure it could be an issue. Check it out.
