Has Remington .22 ammo's quality gone downhill?

I shoot 200 to 300 or more rounds of .22LR almost every Sunday.Lately as ammo has become a little more available,I've starting buying it again instead of using up my stockpile.Have had several duds (all Remington) and the stuff seems to be dirtier than Federal or CCI.
Years ago,Remington was the standard everyone else tried to meet.Has Remington become the brand to avoid?
Also asked Don (rangemaster at Livermore) about when disposing of the duds if he looked to see what the majority of the .22 duds were.He said Remington by far.Anyone else have problems with Rem. .22?

I agree. My current Remington ammo had many duds, aprox 4 out of 50. It is very dirty. However, my 25 years old Remington .22LR ammo performs flawlessly. It costed me 4 cents a round in 1985.

$20 per box? Must've been pretty expensive ammo then.

I've had a lot of duds with the "golden bullets". Even trying to shoot them 2-3 times they were duds. I've actually had much better luck with their cheaper "thunderbolts". My M&P 15-22 loves the thunderbolts.

I bought my .22 15 years ago and the Remington stuff was crap then. I've always had the most amount of duds (even with 2 or 3 restrikes) and it's absolutely the dirtiest ammo I've ever used. Occasionally I'll buy a box because it's the only thing they have and it always reinforces my belief in that the Federal bricks are the best bulk ammo on the shelf.

The super cheap bulk packs are pretty much crap. They shoot great, when they shoot. 10%+ failure rate has been pretty much the norm for me.

If you step up to some of their more expensive ammo, like the Yellowjackets and Vipers - those are pretty good.

Problem i have with the thunderbolts - is they're a bit under-powered for some semi-autos.

CCI MiniMags are still my favorite. They're just a bit more pricey. The Rem Vipers and YellowJackets are comparable to mini-mags.

My preference has been Federal.Like the automatch when I can find it.First time I've bought Remington in a long time.Only have about 700 rounds of Remington left.I'll burn up it and leave the Remington on the shelf for someone else.Kind of sad.Used to be good stuff.

There's an ammo box at my range where you can deposit misfired 22 ammo. Opened the box the other day and its full of Remington ammo. Yes its crap. Oh, no Federal or Winchester in the box. I grabbed a couple and tried to shoot them, no luck.

Remington Golden Bullets are VERY well known among rimfire shooters to be complete crap. If you go over to rimfirecentral, it is kind of like a running joke.

I'll second that. For me my stable for years was the whitebox (White and orage) Winchester...I'd only buy the rems when they were out of the other stuff.

This is wierd, I've had the exact same issues as people are saying here, but with winchester ammo. My Model 60 has a somewhat lighter striking hammer, and I get about 10% failure to fire and still about 5% firing it again. I will agree that the remington is about as dirty as ammo can get. I only shoot federal .22lr any more because of those two issues. And I'm not willing to pay through the nose for cci.

I too have a high failure rate with remington 22lr (10%-15%). Its been that way with the last two boxes I've bought. I use only like to go with Federal, but at the time the only thing on the shelf was remington.
