    ruger 10/22 modification question?

So besides bullets (I have close to 1000 through it as of the moment) what would everyone reccomend as far as modifications to the rifle? I hear he trigger is good first modification, but where do I go from there?

    Thanks

A VQ hammer is the best mod. It will drop the trigger pull from around 8lb's to around 3lb's.
A bolt buffer is also a cheap mod that makes a difference.

If you are a DIY'er then you can polish the internals and really make the trigger nice. I wrote up some instructions a while back. I can post them if you're interested.

The best scope in the world for a 10/22 IMO is this one:

If you don't want to go with a scope, get some aftermarket sights like the Tech Sights.
Doubles the sight radius...much more accurate.

            1st off

to tme the hole trigger assembly is not necessary. i have just the target hamer/sear, and my gf bro has the hole assembly. not to much difference to me personally. his trigger breaks a little cleaner but i still out shot him.

2nd. get a decent scope. Simmons is very good for the price. find what you want as far as price and power, best bet is to find a scope with a wide range of focus. some scopes dont focus to well at shorter ranges. which i noticed with my simmons at about 20yds i eaither can have the reticle or target in focus.

3rd/4th, these two typically come together. new barrel and stock. most guys go with the target barrels with the .920 diameter, which means you either modify your stock or buy a new one. I have an ER shaw barrel on mine and it will shot a bee at 50yds. stock, what ever is comfortable for you. being a tall guy most of the wood stocks you see are just to short for me. so i got a Chistie stock which has an adjustable stock for my lanky *** arms.

that site usually has really good prices on items.
            I love simmons i have had 3. 4x32, 4-12, and a 4-12 SF. all are awesome.

On link 1 for the hammer and sear, what is "hand stoning" and is it something that should be left to a gunsmith?

basically it is taking a really fine stone/file and polishing the contact points between metal surfaces. polishing the surfaces decreses the amount of friction. but what they are talking about is the sear may need to be trimmed in order for the safety to activate? that is what my interpritation of it is mine didnt have a problem i dropped mine right in and it is g2g.

if you have any fear of doing the hand fitting. you can get just the hammer. than take the sear and give it a polsih where it contacts the hammer.

I think you need to decide what you want to do with it. If you want to shoot groups off a bench then a better trigger and scope is what you need. If you want to plink then I'd get a red dot and polish the stock trigger parts.
                  where are my pistol mags?

If you've got a new 10/22 do not remove the barrel, they are glued in, you can remove it if you heat it up but don't bother yet.
First thing is a bolt buffer, it'll make it last longer and save premature wear.
Second the bolt release, either mod the stock item, easy or buy a replacement.
Third the trigger, the biggest single improvement. If you are confident working on your stock trigger parts that is the way to go. A previous post tells you how to do it, I have not read everything there but you can do it yourself. A quick internet search will show you.
Third free float the barrel and ideally bed the receiver.
If you've done all of the above, ok you don't have to bed the receiver to have a fun rifle but for accuracy it is a given.
So all of the above would have given you something that is a lot of fun and accurate.
I have the Tech Sights they are great and I will not ay a bad word about them they take the 10/22 to a level beyond the stock sight. However I have replaced them with a scope. My own 10/22, 2009 vintage with trigger, bolt release and buffer mods, was way to accurate for the Tech Sights so I put a scope on it. I went with the Bushnell 3-9X and it's OK. Whatever scope you get make sure it has either the parallex set at 50yds or has an AO adjustable objective.
The current 10/22s shoot really well with the stock barrel so change this last. I have a Hogue stock for the sporter barrel that I free floated, it works really well it holds the receiver really tight and I floated it, it has the marks on it to machine it out to fit a .920 barrel so there are options but honestly I'm not going to change the barrel before I get a real good 3-9x scope.
There are a multitude of modifications for these rifle, the ones listed worked for me, I have a fun accurate (enough) rifle.

Get a VQ hammer and while you have it apart you can do the auto bolt return.
