Or something else? I want to build an ACCURATE .22 trainer to compliment the 5R I just bought. Im a complete newbie when it comes to .22's but that wont stop me from learning and trying to build a nice and most importantly accurate .22 bolt action, Thanks!

CZ 452 Varment or Ruger M77-22?

I have a CZ452 Varmint that I set up as a trainer to my Rem700 and I could not be happier.
I did float the barrel, bed the action and adjust the trigger... It was a fun project and the rifle is very accurate.Originally posted by GasmanThe 270 is actually built on an action that's halfway in between a Medium and a Large - a "Marge".
Kind of like Bruce Jenner, but the rifle still has a bolt. -

accuracy in a .22lr is mostly determined by the quality of the barrel...that's one reason Anschutz rifles are so expensive.
it has been my experience that generally the CZ comes with a better barrel that the Ruger...because the journey is the worthier part...The Shepherd's TaleComment

Ruger vs CZ
I have both and for the $$$ the CZ is the best buy. My Ruger now has a Lilja barrel and a light pull sear and is just about equal to the CZ 452 American out of the box with a Brooks trigger kit. Both are good bolt action rifles, but the Ruger is over priced compared to the CZ. My Ruger is a very early production model, and never shot bad with the Ruger barrel, but a friend had the Lilja for sale CHEAP, so I had to try it on my rifle. Not much difference noticed at 50 yds, but at 100 it is superior to the CZ and the Ruger barrel, but only slightly so. BTW, don't waste the money on the set trigger CZ, get the Brooks kit for $22 and be happy.sigpicComment

I have both - well, the Ruger is a Hornet but basically the same thing. I'd go with the CZ, you know for certain it's going to be accurate. I have more Rugers than CZs (barely) but I've also gotten rid of 3 or 4 of them because they just didn't shoot well. Never had a problem with the CZs, although groups with the 416 Rigby do tend to open a bit after the first box.

I have a CZ 452 american in .22lr and it points well, shoots beautifully and is a pleasure to carry. Also, I have two varmint 452's, the .22 mag as well as the .17 HMR. The Varmints do not "point" as well as the american, and so are a tad bit better when shot from a bipod than from offhand, but a good replacement trigger helps. Bottom line for me is I prefer the look and feel of the CZ's over the others in its price range.Last edited by bridgeport; 04-28-2010, 10:22 PM.Comment
