So you want to save some dough and install an aftermarket or airsoft rail on your SIG 522? First my experience - It's NOT worth the savings. I started the project because I was intending to post a complete build with pictures and instructions. Anything to help the CGN community.
Excuse the caps but I was a bit pissed when I spent the better part of two days making the $123 "SIG licensed 1:1 airsoft rail" fit on my new 522. Another member here on CGN mentioned that he'd bought a King's Arms SIG 556 airsoft rail http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=265785
And "with a little assistance from my trusty dremmel tool had it fitted tightly" well my definition of "little" must be completely different. We're talking shaving down no less than three areas of the rail system one of which is aluminum (not too bad) and two of which are carbon steel (no walk in the park). The top rail does not mesh up (in stock form) with the existing receiver rail and is far too long (about 1/4"+). I didn't want to make a toy out of what I consider a well made firearm so I didn't want a single thing "loose" after I was done.
I ended up having to drill out and re-Tap the steel tab of the rail so that I could have solid threads to mount to the aluminum part of the rail.
Now the fact is that it DOES WORK and it fits very snugly doesn't diminish the fact that the work I did with a bastard file and dremmel should have been done by an end-mill in a machine shop.
-So... are you still interested in saving ~$120 ?
If so I'll post pictures of what I had to remove and what was involved.
