rifle question?

I am new to guns and am looking at getting a Rifle for just kind of shooting at cans or paper targets with my friends every once in a while, I have only fired a rifle once before and am thinking a .22 because they are fairly inexpensive to purchase bullets for and I will be needing a lot of practice to get my aim up to par. I went to a local gun store and was told a ruger 10/22 was the way to go, does this sound like a good beginner rifle or is there something that anyone else would reccomend instead? I would like to keep the budget under $400.

I would also say a ruger 10/22 is a great first rifle. They are very reliable, inexpensive and can be a fun plinker rifle.

.17HMR's are the best for beginners and are more accurate.

Cost/benefit ratio... 50 rounds of .17HMR ~ $13 ..... 500 rounds of .22LR $20
You be the judge. If learning the basics requires practice then you're better off shooting a lot for less.

Do you want a bolt action or a semi-auto? If you're going the semi route then the 10/22 is going to be hard to beat. If you're considering a bolt gun (my first was) then consider the CZ 452, Marlin 980 or the Savage 64 and 93.

The best gun is the one that you can afford to shoot and that meets your specific needs. If you need flatter trajectory... then by all means go with a .17HMR, it's a fine cartridge if you don't have wind to worry about.

50 rounds of 17hmr will kill 50 varints with skill while 500 rounds of .22lr even with skill will kill 10 varmints because the lack of range and accuracy unless you want to put a lot of money into it. 10/22's are not bad fro plinking but a great all around gun would be a .17.

A beginner needs to shot Volume.......Get a 22 so you can comfortably afford to shoot it. I like the Ruger 10/22 Stainless rifles but there is nothing wrong with a bolt gun. Then Shoot, Shoot, Shoot......................learn to make each shot count.....Too many guys here are looking at the next shot in the magazine rather than the one in the chamber. That is why single shots are so popular as beginners guns, They force you to pay attention to each round.

10/22 cant go wrong with that selection, there are others you can go with like a marlin bolt action but, you should feel fine with your choice, your money is well spent. Make sure your 10/22 either has grooves or is tapped for a scope mount if you choose to get a scope later in time. Learn you iron sights first before you go with scope and get more then 1 magazine, get a few extra's.

right, but the OP specifically asked for a plinking type gun. He did not mention hunting at all.

10/22 can be configured and upgraded to your hearts content. I have one for sale for just a little bit more than your budget but worth much more. Plus it's already dressed up direct from Ruger.

Big has the Stainless 10/22 for 259.00 on ad this week......You can make it over as you need but that is a great start.

cool, what are the associated fees normally like. Sorry for all the questions, I am kind of new to the whole firearm thing

associated fees are taxes and DROSing. The DROS fee i think is $35. U willl need to buy ammo and cleaning kit and a case to carry the thing. For cleaning I use breakfree clp and remmington oil at the range. for cleaning you can use a regular rod and patch or get a .22 caliber bore snake (is use the snake). Ammo is whatever is cheap.
