Before you go to a BLM, check with F&G and find out whether or not you need a permit to hunt ground squirrels... sounds dumb, but if your on public property it may not be legal if the warden comes around...

Get a BLM or National Forrest map, some water, trail mix, and start hiking. No one is going to give up their prime spots. Word gets around, and sure as **** that spot will be ruined. Better yet, go somewhere outside of California. At least then you won't have the vultures waiting in the isles to fine you and confiscate your gear. It's been a wet winter, so there should be no shortage of varmints.

Hey Skummers, ground squirrels are pests......shoot as many as you want....just make sure you dont somehow mix a tree squirrel (they are gray with fluffy long tails) and a ground squirrel (brown and ugly)

The idea of just going out of state sounds more appealing to me these days. It's like a 4 hour drive to Reno for me, could make an over nighter, even use the AR the way it's meant to be used while I'm at it...

Anyone know what shooting varmints/coyotes is like in the State of Nevada around the Reno/Sparks area?

Technically wildlife is equally owned by everybody and entrusted to the state to be managed. Non-game rodents do not require a license in the code but many wardens cite you if you don't have a license. There have been several threads in the hunting and fishing sub-forum on this very topic.

Yep--get a license to be covered and remain unharassed by wardens (for good reason--I respect our game laws and those who enforce them have my support).

Really? I thought you could take ground squirrels year round:

(a) The following nongame birds and mammals may be taken at any time of the year and in any number except as prohibited in Chapter 6: English sparrow, starling, coyote, weasels, skunks, opossum, moles and rodents (excluding tree and flying squirrels, and those listed as furbearers, endangered or threatened species).

Yeah I looked it up right after getting my .22
The season ended earlier this year, this was ground squirrels saw nothing for any other type.
And I wanna say the bags and tags were full price for hunting, like 5 for 5 dollars or something.
