.22 with the most stopping power

Before I ask my question, I want to clarify that I'm aware .22s are not adequate for home defense.

Which .22 ammo is considered to be most adequate for stopping power and causes the most immediate damage? Thanks

I think the CCI stingers are awesome, they will stop any squirrel in its tracks, the drawback is they cost a fortune, I would like to see how the WIN 22LR tin works, has about the same ballistics at the stinger, but even more costly.

I use Remington Vipers for all my hunting needs. It's worked well for me over the years.

I know the stingers are fast. From un-scientific testing (read: melons and varmints/pests) I have seen great expansion from Remington Yellow Jackets also. Quite impressive. I'm not sure if they are still in production, but they had a huge hollow point that really worked well. The only trouble was the hollow point was so big it prevented the rounds from feeding smoothly sometimes in semi-autos. OH and I need one of those AM15's soooo bad. seriously, my Dr. said so.

If we're going that route, there are more powerful chamberings. Excluding wildcats, the Remington .30-06 22 Accelerator comes to mind (55gr., 4000+fps, 2000 foot-pounds).

.22LR and stopping power are not usually used in the same sentence.
That said, If I had to use a .22LR for defense, I would choose CCI Stingers and practice a lot. A hit with a .22 is better than a miss with a .45.

I think .22s are underrated and make excellent home defense rounds. If an intruder is in your home, a few 22 rounds to the chest, or even face/head would definately slow him down. First of all, you'll probably be shooting him indoors in confined spaces. I don't have to tell you guns are LOUD. Now at 3am in the kitchen or bedroom, even a 9mm cartridge going off will sound like Thor's hammer. A 22 will be more managable: follow-up shots are a breeze too. Hey, I bet most of us here can put round after round in a bad guys left eye with a 22 at close range. Our SO and children might ONLY be able to handle a 22 under stress. BTW, that MP5 looking gun the MP22 (?) would be an awesome HD weapon. I unfortunately only have a T-Bolt in 22, so I'm sticking with 9mm Golden Sabers.

Now if the SHTF, I'll probably go to a 556; but how likely is that?

Now, like everyone here, I've never shot anyone. I doubt anyone has enough ballistic data and expertise to rule out the 22lr. Confidence is probably as important as anything. So carry what you want.

If you're talking .22 rimfire I'd have to say .22 mag. For a rimfire round they're pretty nasty. Almost unpleasant to shoot out of a Derringer...almost.

@five. five six: is that legal? I thought fully automatic ANYTHING is illegal for civilians to own now, even .22s? If not, tell me where to get one.

Op, not trying to be a smart-***, but if you want stopping power I suggest moving up a few calibers: 9mm, .40 or .45 and not any .22 period. If it ever comes to life or death with a .22 pistol, shoot to the forehead a few times.
